About the Item

Finds such as these are rare, as it’s a fascinating piece of the early XX century history of England G & J.W. Hawksley was a manufacturing firm based in Sheffield, England, recognized for producing powder flasks and gun loading tools, especially prominent in the mid-1800s. It was founded by brothers George and John William Hawksley. Of rounded rectangular form, (the shape is slightly curved to give a good fit to the body when in a pocket), the flask is leather covered & top mounted with a hinged lid. Bearing English hallmarks: Maker’s mark - G & J.W.H (Hawksley) Crown & lion passant – for English sterling silver & a letter date Retailed by Harrods, London. The flask is further engraved with the initials “R.B.” – for Sir Richard Burbridge who was a chairman of Harrods, Knightsbridge, London Dimensions: 11.5cm (H) x 6.5cm (W) Weight: 191gr.
