About the Item

A rare and truly exceptional French timepiece from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This majestic antique treasure is comprised of a pocket watch and accompanying key fob that hang below a matching brooch. The piece is crafted in vibrant 18kt gold, and finished with sterling silver accents across the surface. Both the brooch and locket are encrusted with Rose Cut diamonds, and feature a clover-like design formed by four amethyst "petals." Additional amethyst stones and Rose Cut diamonds are incorporated into the hanging key fob and the connecting link. Each amethyst is smoothly polished and foil-backed, resting securely within a closed back bezel setting. The rich, regal purple color of the amethyst stones is complimented perfectly by the Rose Cut diamonds! They line the center and sides in a Maltese cross formation, with the largest stones displayed in a raised "buttercup" setting. The reverse side of the piece displays the watch face at the base, and a bar pin clasp and "c-catch" on the back of the brooch. The watch case opens to reveal a French eagle head touchmark and patent numbers (both not pictured) stamped inside. Two additional touchmarks, one of a Chimera, are visible on the handle of the watch. When worn, the brooch affixes securely to the desired garment, with the elongated link and pocket watch hanging prominently below. Accompanying the piece is the original antique box, which displays a crown and the initials "V.H.T." on the lid. Lining the interior of the box is a cream-colored satin fabric under the lid, and a fitted velvet pad designed to encase the shape of the timepiece perfectly. Stamped inside the lid is the French jeweler's name and location details, where the piece would have originally been displayed and sold. This outstanding museum-quality piece is incredibly well-preserved, and would make a breathtaking addition to any serious antique jewelry or watch collection! The overall length of the piece measures 3 3/4" long (from the top of the brooch to the base of the pocket watch). The brooch at the top measures 1 1/4" long and wide, and 3/8" thick, with the center diamond raised 3/16" above the surface. The pocket watch at the base measures 1 1/2" long (including the handle), 1 1/8" in diameter, and is 1/2" thick. The key fob is 1 1/8" long, and measures 3/8" at the widest/thickest point. The connecting link between the brooch and watch measures 1 1/8" in total length. The box dimensions are 4 3/4" x 2 1/8" x 1 3/8." The total weight of the piece (box excluded) is 32.5 d.w.t. (50.6 grams). The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, it remains remarkably well-preserved, and has no signs of significant damage. All of the rose cut diamonds and amethyst cabochons are intact and securely set. Each connection within the design is securely attached and soldered (with the exception of clasp, which is designed to detach if needed). The pin clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition. The watch does tick when wound, but may need to be assessed by a watch specialist to assess whether it can be used to reliably keep time. Antique watches in good working condition generally need to be oiled and cleaned from time to time to preserve their function. The accompanying box has some normal signs of surface wear commensurate with age, but remains in good pre-owned condition.
