About the Item

FACTORY / HOUSE: Dueber Hampden Watch Company STYLE / REFERENCE: Cushion Shaped / Military Style METAL / MATERIAL: Nickel Silver CIRCA / YEAR: 1920's DIMENSIONS / SIZE: Length 28mm X Diameter 35mm MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 15 Jewels / Caliber 3/0 Size Diadem DIAL / HANDS: Original Silvered with Luminous Numerals / Original Blued Steel Hands ATTACHMENT / LENGTH: Leather Original , 16mm / Regular Length WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement This is a "vault find" watch, it has been locked up for nearly 50 years, which means it needs a service. We will give it a factory quality service by our finest watchmaker as part of the purchase price before it is shipped out to you. This will delay shipping for a few days of course. LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This is a watch we never see in this condition, with everything, including the original strap in good condition. The dial, hands and crown are also original. It is also still fitted with its original "compression bars" to hold the strap on. While typically a watch would have a spring bar, this watch has a pin going through it with a tube holding it in place. Hamden was one of the few companies doing this. While it appears to have an original period strap and buckle the strap is to fragile to actually wear every day.. We have fitted it with a modern genuine lizard strap using the original buckle. You will never see a finer example of an American Vintage Wrist Watch than this one. Dueber-Hampden Watch Company History In 1930, the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company sold its factory and assets to the Soviet Union. The sale was part of a larger effort by the Soviet Union to acquire American industrial technology. The Dueber-Hampden Watch Company was one of the leading watch manufacturers in the United States, and its technology was considered to be among the most advanced in the world. The sale of the factory and assets to the Soviet Union gave the Soviet Union access to this technology, which it could use to improve its own watchmaking industry. The sale of the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company to the Soviet Union was controversial at the time. Some people argued that it was a mistake to sell such a valuable asset to a foreign country. Others argued that the sale was necessary to help the Soviet Union improve its own watchmaking industry. The sale of the factory and assets to the Soviet Union had a significant impact on the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company. The company eventually went out of business, and its employees were laid off. The sale of the factory and assets to the Soviet Union also had a significant impact on the American watchmaking industry. The Soviet Union's acquisition of American technology helped it to improve its own watchmaking industry, and this competition from the Soviet Union made it more difficult for American watchmakers to compete.

Howard was an exceptional watchmaker who had worked originally for the Willard Clock Company. Willard was the premier American clock maker and advanced American horology. Howard’s exceptional designs and innovations helped establish America as a watchmaking capital along with the Waltham Watch Company. Howard’s creativity helped establish the principles of industrialization and standardized parts. Howards watches were rugged and very accurate as well. Their case designs were innovative as well. Howard watches were used by scientists and engineers in military and industry because they were rugged and dependable. In 1903, the Howard Watch Company was acquired by the Keystone Watch Case Company. Keystone continued to produce Howard watches under the Howard brand name until 1935. By that time the great depression had taken its toll on all but the most robust watch companies. During the 1920’s Howard produced the 12-size caliber which was a beautifully finished watch that kept exceptional time. It was also one of the few American watches that met most of the standards of what is called a “Geneva Seal...
