This great looking Art Deco Watch was produced by legendary house of Gruen. Their American base was in Cincinnati Ohio but they were primarily a Swiss House. This great example of their workmanship is entirely hand made, case and movement. The dial was produced by the Stern Freres Dial House in Geneva Switzerland. Stern was the largest and most renowned dial house in the world at the time. In the early 1930's Patek Philippe filed for bankruptcy due to the world wide depression and there was only one company in Switzerland that could save it. Stern bought Patek Philippe Watch Company and today The Henry Stern Agency owns Patek Philippe.
The case is hand constructed in solid gold and it is hand engraved and the enamel inlay, or glass is fired in a furnace at 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. This method of production is not longer done because of the complexity of production, and we have never seen this model before.
In the 1930, shortly after this watch was manufactured we became Gruen agents in Los Angeles California. Gruen was a great company to work with because they had large collection, great styling, they were innovative and offered great service to their customers. It is sad that they could not, like so many other American Watch Companies withstand the Swiss and Japanese marketing.

This is a rare watch, in fact it is the only example we have ever seen. A ladies Art Deco, "Dr's" Pulse watch which was likely supplied to a nurse. Based on its serial numbers it predates 1925, making it perhaps more than 100 years old. Yet we just serviced it and functions is if it was brand new. An extremely rare and unusual deco wristwatch, created in Switzerland by Mido for the Bugatti company. Made during the art deco period in the shape of a automobile radiator grill, back in the 1930. Crafted in solid yellow gold of 14 karats with the logo of Bugatti which is embellished with applications of red white and black enamel and the letters EB, for Ettore Bugatti. Fitted with a hinged snap lid.
History
Between the mid-1920s and the mid-1930s, Mido produced less than a hundred watches for the very famous Bugatti automobile brand. The notable feature of these pieces was their case shaped like the iconic radiator grille on the famous car. They were specially ordered by Mr. Ettore Bugatti to the Mido manufacture, often offered to his best pilots, mechanics and to his family. Bolstered by this success, Mido developed its famous watches for motorists in 1925 and 1926. The brand filed a patent for its watch cases and for some dials inspired by the finest vehicles of the era. These included pocket and pendant watches, all of which mirrored the radiators from a large number of car manufacturers, including: Alfa Romeo, Benz, Bugatti (or EB, for Ettore Bugatti), Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroën, De Dion-Bouton, Delage, Farman, Fiat, Ford, Hispano-Suiza, Lancia, Lincoln, Opel, Peugeot, Pic-Pic, Rolls-Royce and Talbot.
