He lived in Bruges, and he was a Belgian painter and one of important Bruges School artists. His brother Frans Van der Smissen (1894-1964) was a sculptor. Leo was a painter of town views, sturdy of trees, landscapes, church interiors, still lifes, marines, interiors, portraits, and some nudes. He acts as a colourist, who practices sobriety. His preference, woodland scenes, a genre in which he has climbed to a solid refinement, particularly specific are the depiction of the tree trunks. His works, brushed concisely and boldly, betray a strong hand that bends the colour ranges to his will and he can adapt to all kinds of subjects. Leo studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts (1913 – 1919) with master teacher and artist Flori Van Acker and won several first prizes there. He studied also at Ghent Academy of Fine Arts (1920 – 1921) with master teachers Godron and Karel Tremerie and later at Dendermonde Academy of Fine Arts (1923 – 1924). Initially strongly influenced by the style of Courtens and the Dendermonde School, under the guidance of painter Ferdinand Willaert he evolved towards to Luminism. Franssen" in any encyclopaedia or reference work. There was a Dutch artist, Jan Fransen (1604/5 - ca. 1646), who was mainly based in Amsterdam. According to Thieme/Becker, he created numerous paintings with biblical depictions, study heads and still lifes. However, it could also have been Jan Franssen or Frantzen, who was not born until 1644 but was also active in Amsterdam. However, no confirmed works by either artist are known. Just as interesting as the attribution is the depiction: a young woman holds her child on her lap while she prepares a meal on a hob. At the same time she holds a rose in her hand. His father was a goldsmith. In 1931 he got married and went to live in the Biezenstraat. He died on February 12, 1989. He was a painter, restorer of paintings and copyist of Flemish Primitives. In 1912 he entered the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts with director Flori Van Acker as his teacher and famed artist. In 1926 the Municipal Council of Bruges appointed him as a teacher at the Bruges Academy. He would remain in this position until 1966, the year he retired. Poupaert turned out to be a solid painter with high qualities. He painted numerous Bruges townscapes and also made portraits of important Bruges figures. In the period 1952-1956, he painted two portraits of guardians and superiors of the convent of Our Lady of the Pottery. In 1955 he collaborated with Jules Fonteyne on the murals of the Church of Christ the King. In 1961 he copied for the second time Memling’s triptych “The Adoration of the Magi” by order of Bruges Naval College who gave it as a gift to the King and Queen of Belgium...

Charles was a painter of landscapes, city views, seascapes, still lifes, flowers, children, genre scenes, figures (often Spanish beauties) and portraits. He was also illustrator and lithographer. Younger brother and pupil of Philippe Swyncop. He studied at the Academy of Brussels (1908-1917 and 1919-1920) with as teachers, J. Delville, H. Richir and Alfred Bastien. He also travelled to Rome and Venice. In Rome he studied iconography and the study of the great masters. Also found, like his brother, inspiration in Spain. Like his brother, he painted in a lighter genre. But, unlike his brother, he used subtle, spontaneous brushstrokes such as the French Fauvists. His colourful sea views are reminiscent of the works of Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1920 Swyncop assisted his teacher Alfred Bastien with the panoramic painting “Panorama de l’Yser”. Other assistant painters were Charles Léonard and Jef Bonheur, also former pupils of Bastien. The work was done in what later became the mosque of the Cinquantenaire Park. From 1924 onwards, it was given a suitable panoramic building in Ostend. The canvas was severely damaged during the Second World War. Charles Swyncop took part in a group exhibition at ‘Maison d’Art Moderne’ in Brussels in 1920 together with Jean Colin, Philippe Swyncop, Arthur Navez, Samuel Milbauer, L. Bisschops, J. Payro and Jean-Jacques Gailliard. He received an honourable mention (third prize) on the Prize of Rome in 1920. In the years 1922-1923 he made study trips to Spain and Italy. There he made portraits of the local population. He regularly returned to Spain. Commissioned by the Ministry of Colonies, he painted decorative panels for the 1930 World Fair in Antwerp. A masterfully painted scene originating from the artist's studio In this painting, Langaskens brings together several motifs that were also the subject of his graphic work: the blind man, the priest, the nun and the farm that also appears in the famous etching "les toits rouges" (the red roofs). These elements are brought together in a dynamic and colourful composition, where the similarities to that other Belgian painter, Anto Carte, are striking. Combining these elements in this way creates a certain tension. Is the work about mercy (helping a blind man), or are we spectators of a scene where a poor wretch's purse is stolen? Striking is the use of impasto, in which the painter emphasises the texture of fabrics and skin via flowing lines. Maurice Langaskens 1884 - 1946 Biography A Belgian painter and printmaker, Maurice (Maurits) Langaskens enrolled in the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1901, and was trained as a decorative painter by the leading Belgian muralist and sculptor Constant Montald. From early on, Langaskens was recognized as a fine draughtsman, and won several prizes at the Académie. After living and studying for a few months in France in 1906, mainly in Dijon, the young Langaskens settled in Schaerbeek, outside Brussels. He began his independent career in 1907, when he exhibited three decorative paintings at the Salon in Brussels for the first time and also had an exhibition of his work shown at the Salle Boute in the city. The following year he contributed six paintings to the 16th annual exhibition of the Belgian artist’s association ‘Pour l’Art’ in Brussels, where he was to exhibit frequently over the course of his later career, until 1941. (Langaskens also designed the poster for the 17th ‘Pour l’Art’ exhibition in 1909.) Also in 1908, one of his paintings was selected for an exhibition of modern Belgian art in Berlin. Much of Langaskens’s early work was in a vibrant and visually arresting Art Nouveau or Symbolist style. This bold and colourful manner also translated well into large-scale mural commissions, and he soon became one of the leading painter-decorators of the early 20th century in Belgium. His decoration of the town hall of the city of Zoutleeuw in 1912 earned the artist considerable fame and the praise of his teacher and mentor Montald: ‘He was one of the best students in the class; today he is the most outstanding artist among the decorators of our time.’ The same year the first of several exhibitions of Langasken’s work was mounted at the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire in Brussels. The outbreak of the First World War, however, brutally interrupted the rise of the artist’s successful career. Drafted into the Belgian army at the beginning of August 1914, Langaskens was captured by the Germans after less than a fortnight. He spent the next three and half years as a prisoner of war, at internment camps at Sennelager, Münsterlager and Göttingen. He produced numerous, mostly small-scale paintings and watercolours of portraits and depictions of many of his fellow prisoners, as well as scenes of daily camp life, that are today regarded as among his finest and most personal works. It was also during this period that he painted two of his best-known pictures, the large canvas In Memoriam, painted in 1916 and depicting the burial of a Belgian soldier by his comrades, and the monumental triptych Repose en Paix, painted between 1915 and 1918. After his liberation and return to Belgium, Langaskens exhibited over eighty of the paintings and drawings that he had produced as a prisoner of war at the Galerie Sneyers in Brussels in 1918. After the Armistice, Langaskens - suffering from aphasia and nervous disorders brought about by his long confinement - painted mainly easel pictures of winter landscapes, rustic genre scenes and floral subjects, and also produced a number of designs for tapestries, book illustrations and stained-glass windows. Within a few years, however, his health had recovered and he returned to undertaking large-scale decorative mural commissions.
