ARMANDO (Amsterdam 1929 - Potsdam 2018)
Sculptor, Writer, Film and documentary maker, Violinist
Education:
Armando studied art history in Amsterdam for a number of years.
He lived in Amstelveen and worked in Amsterdam.
Armando (Amsterdam 1929) is one of the most important post-war Dutch artists and he is appreciated nationally and internationally. His work, based on his personal experience of the Second World War in Amersfoort, deals with existential and universal themes that he describes in terms of power and powerlessness, perpetrators and victims, memory, transience and melancholy.
Fascination for violence and evil determines his work from the outset. Amazed by the treacherous beauty of this violence, Armando uniquely elaborates his theme in every discipline that he practices. Driven by the desire for insight into evil and for the mastery of the techniques to shape his theme, he explores the possibilities of every medium to the extreme.
Armando's work comprises series of monumental paintings, pasty and worked through in black and white with here and there traces of color, subtle, poetic drawings and graphics. From 1989 onwards sculptures appear that seem to be shaped and bent by forces of nature. Armando's prose and poetry have their own place. In a very specific language, the unspeakable, surrounded by a lot of white, is expressed. Documentaries in which both perpetrators and victims have the floor, films, theater and theater performances complete an oeuvre of which both visual and literary work have been awarded several times. As a violinist of the Armando Quartet, Armando expresses the feeling of melancholy and melancholy that has a place in all his work, in music.

Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition.
About Alan Shields:
Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...

Hand signed by Richard Diebenkorn in graphite pencil on the front (unnumbered)
Published by Knapp Communications Corporation for Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee
Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the publisher. This is one of only 750 hand signed lithographic posters, published in 1982 to celebrate the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics . However, the publisher is said to have destroyed many of the works that did not sell in the original marketing period, so only about 200-250 are said t remain. The Olympic Committee commissioned 15 nationally known artists, including West Coast artists like Sam Francis and Richard Diebenkorn, to create unique designs to promote the event. This was Diebenkorn's contribution to the portfolio. Hand signed Richard Diebenkorn prints (with the full signature) like this are extremely elusive and desirable. excellent provenance as it was acquired as part of the complete portfolio of limited edition hand signed Olympic prints, all held in the original box with colophon.
