Geoffrey Bowman "Black Diamond", Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas, 1984
Located in Cathedral City, CA
Geoffrey Bowman (1928-2009) "Black Diamond", Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas, 1984 Beautiful colorful and textural smaller scale painting by California artist Geoffrey Bowman. Measures 21-1/2" high, 21-1/2" wide as framed. Canvas measures 21" high, 21" wide. Signed and dated on reverse. Retains partial artist tag. Geoffrey Bowman was born in San Francisco on December 29, 1928. In 1946, he quit high school and joined the Navy and traveled to China, Korea, the Philippines, and Hawaii. In 1948 after being discharged from the Navy, Bowman earned his high school equivalency diploma. Five years later he met and married his first wife Mill, and graduated from San Francisco State University with a BA in Social Science. During this time he also became intensely interested in art and printmaking and began to study art formally. By 1957 Geoffrey had earned his graduate degree in art and began to teach art in San Quentin. In 1960 Bowman left his teaching job at San Quentin to spend more time working on his art and examining Asian philosophy at the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco. During this time to support himself and his wife Geoffrey drove a taxi at night so that he could have his days free to work in the studio. In 1964 he joined the art faculty at San Jose State University and moved to San Jose and became a full professor in 1973. Geoffrey taught at SJSU for twenty-nine years, specializing in lithography and intaglio printmaking techniques. At the same time he was deeply involved in his own work and accumulated an impressive professional exhibition record and his work was exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally. Bowman’s work is in several public permanent collections including the San Jose Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Art, Achenbach Foundation of Graphic Arts San Francisco, Lannan Foundation New York, and Crown Press Berkeley. After retiring from teaching in 1994 Geoffrey turned to painting as his primary medium of expression. Although there was a media shift he continued to focus on one subject: the consistency of change. This he accomplished in part with combinations of paint and an assortment of reflective materials such as metallic flake and leaves, glass beads, and light-refracting pigments. Bowman became quite private in his later years and had his last one-man public exhibition in 2001 at the Fredrick Spratt Gallery in San Jose. Bowman died in San Jose, California on October 9, 2009. Vintage Orig Metallic Painting by O. E. L. Graves Extremely Rare Collectible
By O.E.L. Graves
Located in Palm Springs, CA
We are so proud to offer this original work of art by legendary Palm Springs artist O. E. L. Graves. We discovered his work when we first purchased a second home here in 1997. His work was very difficult to come across, but stories about Mr. Graves were legendary, and the first art we saw of his were his extraordinary and very collectible cover art for vintage mid century Palm Springs villager magazines which we found at some thrift stores! We have since collected 8 original paintings. This is the Rolls-Royce of the collection. His artwork is now collected by a new generation of the Palm Springs younger rich and famous entertainment industry that have brought new life to the town with Coachella Music Festival and the endearing architecture Palm Springs is famous for! We purchased an amazing coffee table book by French photographer Robert Doisneau called “Palm Springs 1960” Mr Graves himself and his artwork is featured in wonderful 1960s vintage photographs. This spurred on more collectors looking for his paintings. This large painting was definitely owned by a Palm Springs/Beverly Hills client. His work was even sought out by Rockefeller that wanted to buy a painting of Mr. Graves that he refused to sell! The paintings were very expensive. Just the original painting’s framing alone shows how chic and special it was. The subject is a bird in its cage with a clock in the corner, In shades of silver, green, black and gold. There is a name on the painting, along side Mr. Graves signature we believe to be the title of the painting, “Orsi” It is such an extraordinary painting! Please check out the pictures to see the amazing color and details of this work. O. E. L. Graves (1897 - 1971) Graves was an American artist and painter/sculptor based in Palm Springs, California during Hollywood's golden years. His client list included many of the rich and famous of his era, from movie stars (Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Janet Gaynor) to business magnates (Raymond Loewys, George R. Hearst Sr.) to shady criminal kingpins. His own personal life was just as full of high intrigue and secrecy as the famous clients he cultivated. As a result, his need to maintain a relatively low profile in his private life has relegated him to near obscurity in death as an artist. Graves experimented constantly with new media and techniques for expressing his art. His works include delicate watercolors, fine detailed portraits, impressionistic oils, sculptures in metal, and some techniques of his own invention. Graves claims to have invented "sculpted oil painting", where multiple layers of thick oil paint are placed on masonite and then cut away to create the image. His sculpted oil paintings were displayed in some of the trendiest galleries and art museums, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, which purchased some of his sculpted paintings after they had been shown there. Winthrop Rockefeller...

1957 Fred Hocks Oil on Canvas Abstract Painting
By Fred Hocks
Located in San Diego, CA
Excellent example of a large oil on canvas abstraction by Fred Hocks from 1957. This painting was included in the 1976 retrospective at the Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego which later became the San Diego Museum of Art. No painter embodies San Diego’s early avant-garde more than Fred (Ferdinand) Hocks, a German-born painter who began visiting San Diego in the late 1920s after studies at the California School of Fine Art in San Francisco and the Art Students League in New York. Fellow painter Dan Dickey credited Hocks in 1947 with “opening up pathways for future, more enlightened generations (of artists),” and predicted that Fred Hocks would be “esteemed a master.” During the post-war years Hocks was assistant director of the San Diego School of Arts and Crafts, a private art school in La Jolla, and was instrumental in keeping affordable artist’s studios in Spanish Village. Along with modern architect Lloyd Ruocco, Fred Hocks co-founded the dynamic Allied Artists Council with Belle Baranceanu, Everett Gee Jackson, Dan Dickey and John Olsen. The well-travelled Hocks exhibited in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Paris, Mallorca and Guadalajara, had several one-person shows at the Art Center La Jolla/La Jolla Museum of Art and at the Fine Arts Gallery (SDMA). The San Diego Museum of Art held a major retrospective of his painting in 1976, just a few years before his death. He brought a continental element to the local art scene and is described in Bruce Kamerling’s 100 Years of Art in San Diego as “one of the most adventurous local artists…an intelligent and articulate defender of modern tendencies in art.” Local arts and architecture writer James Britton called Fred Hocks “the dean of the San Diego moderns...

19th C. Mexican Retablo "Veronica's Veil", c.1880
Located in San Francisco, CA
About An original 19th century Mexican folk retablo "Veronica's Veil" or "El Divono Rostro" in Spain . Oil paint on tin. The Veil of Veronica, known in Italian as the Volto Santo or Holy Face, is a Roman Catholic Relic which, according to legend, bears the likeness of the Face of Jesus that was imprinted on it prior to Jesus' crucifixion. According to Roman Catholicism, Saint Veronica encountered Jesus in Jeruselum on the way to Calvary. When she paused to wipe the sweat (Latin, suda) off his face with her veil, his image was left on the veil. In the small village of Osa de la Vega in Spain, there lived a couple who led a very pious life. They were Gregorio de la Torre and Isabel Corral. From their father, Juan Montilla, they inherited a picture of the Face of Jesus or the Divino Rostro. A story that is told one day, to the amazement of many who confirmed its veracity, the picture began to perspire with living blood. News of this extraordinary event spread swiftly and widely throughout the land. CREATOR Unknown. DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1880. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Oil Paint on Tin. CONDITION Good. Wear consistent with age and use. DIMENSIONS H 14 in. W 10 in. HISTORY Retablos, better known as 'laminas' in Mexico, are small oil paintings on tin, wood and sometimes copper which were used in home altars to venerate the almost infinite number of Catholic saints. The literal translation for 'retablo' is 'behind the altar.' This unique genre of art, deeply rooted in European history, was brought to Mexico with the arrival of the Spanish and then ultimately adopted by New World mestizo natives to become what is known today as the Mexican folk retablo. The retablo was an art form that flourished in post conquest Mexico and then ultimately, with the introduction of inexpensive mediums such as tin, reached its pinnacle of popularity in the last quarter of the 19th century. With some exceptions, mostly untrained artists from the provinces worked to produce and reproduce these sacred images; some subjects painted more prolifically than others. A typical "retablero" may have reproduced the same image hundreds, if not thousands of times in his or her career. These oil paintings were sold to devout believers who displayed them in home altars to honor their patron saints. There are virtually hundreds of saints, each invoked to remedy a different situation. "San Ysidro Labrador," the patron saint of farmers, is venerated for good weather...
