Chicago - Animal Paintings

Juxtaposing and altering unrelated natural objects with the machinations of man to create a scene of an impossible surreal world, the viewer enters the mind of artist Christopher Klein...

"Uscita" takes Inspiration from ancient Italian frescos originally found at the Villa di Livia outside of Rome. The trompe l'oeil frescos were from a subterranean room used for dining. The lush gardens gave the dinner guests the illusion of dining alfresco. Here Pylant took particular notice of the flora and fauna painted over 2000 years ago only to discover they were species that were also present at her then North Carolina studio. The artist adds an architectural element to the gardenscape to suggest a portal from the past into the present. This exploration of the ancient world and its connection to the present is a central theme running through Pylant's work. Carol S. Designers have an wide reach through out the world but have yet to reach the depths of the ocean. Artist Jeff Conroy has created this Gyotaku print of large ray entitled simply "Channel Quilted Black Caviar Ray" to fill that void. To achieve this remarkable painting, the artist applies sumi ink to a sting ray he caught himself on Florida's Gulf Coast, then "prints" it onto Marbled Mulberry paper - a soft, handmade paper. He then embellishes the details with watercolor to give extraordinary dimension and interest to its overall aesthetic. The artwork is framed as shown. The painting is based on the sketch I made for a friend who in the early 90's wrote an account of his years as an occultist in Berkely, CA during the 1970's and 80's. He apprenticed himself to a charismatic magician. The latter believed himself to be both the returned Christ and the magical child (incarnated spell) of the infamous Alestair Crowley. This magician took on the form of Mickey Mouse in order to carry out his ministry, the ultimate goal of which was to be crowned at the Vatican. In time the apprentice became roused to individuate from his master and took the Satanic role in the form of Donald Duck (the avian predator of mice: Horus the Avenger...

I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. The subjects of my paintings are usually based on the patterns and textures of nature and human interaction with nature. I have found subjects to paint in remote wilderness areas of the world, local parking lots, and my own backyard.
