"The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington..." after Renault, 1819
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an engraving entitled “The British surrendering their arms to Gen. Washington after their defeat at Yorktown Virginia October 1781.” The dedication continues in the bottom margin, “To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York.” The engraving is after a painting by John Francis Renault, and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. and William Allen, in Philadelphia in January of 1819.
This historic print depicts the surrender of the British forces after the Battle of Yorktown. The print shows Lord Cornwallis offering his sword to the Duke de Lauzun, who defers the weapon to General Washington. British officers stand with Cornwallis on the right and French and American officers are shown at center and left. The immediate background is filled with an elaborate allegorical scene. Behind the British troops is a female representation of “Discord,” wearing a billowing robes and liberty cap and floating on storm clouds, as she sends lightning bolts to up-end the British people and a chariot below her. Behind the American and French officers, “Prosperity” stands next to an overflowing cornucopia, with “Justice”, an infant child with a paddle inscribed “American Constitution,” representing the helm of statehood. They crowd around a neoclassical monument with a giant urn...

"Wear the 'FIGHTIN'EST' wings in the service" Vintage WWII Marine Poster, 1942
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is an original World War II Marines recruitment poster from 1942. The poster, a color lithograph, was printed by the Alpha Litho. Co., out of Camden, NJ. In the center of the composition appears a striking blue eagle, which tears apart a Japanese plane with its talons. The poster displays the slogan "Wear the FIGHTINEST wings in the service, Fly with the Marines" in bold letters above and below the image. On the bottom in black lettering is the phrase: "Apply, or write, to nearest recruiting station." The Marines logo appears in yellow in the top right hand corner of the composition, set against a red background.
The Second World War ushered in the biggest government-led advertising campaign to date, critical to the wartime communication needs of every combatant: from raising money, recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, to spurring production and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The Office of War Information (OWI) commissioned some of the nation’s leading artists to produce the stark, colorful graphic designs. The posters played to the fears, frustrations, and faith in freedoms that lingered in people's minds during the war.
The most common themes found in the posters were the consequences of careless talk, supporting the war effort at home through conservation, victory gardens, and the purchasing of War Bonds, and anti-German and Japanese propaganda...

This attractive map, published in Paris in 1812, is one of the most rare large format maps from the period. It features a view of the East Coast of the U.S. from Maryland to just below South Carolina. Additionally, Ellicott’s plan for the City of Washington D.C. is included at the top right and an illustration of Niagara Falls is shown at the bottom right with a description in both French and English. Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC.

Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Offered is a stunning Sheffield silver keepsake box dating to 1900, with associated hallmark. This small box includes a clean interior and rounded corners. The box is free of names or initials, but would have been used to house keepsakes such as jewelry or cufflinks. A well maintained, elegant piece, this antique silver box is an excellent addition to any silver collection.
Trinket or keepsake boxes have taken on many forms since their first conception in ancient times. However their purpose remains the same; to store jewelry and other items precious to the owner. Originally, these boxes were used specifically for jewelry. These were in common use as early as 5000 BC in Ancient Egypt, when the majority of Egyptians, both male and female, wore jewelry. Boxes were used to keep these gemstone encrusted items safe. In Ancient Rome, jewelry was a status symbol. Rings and brooches were utilized to represent ones status in society. Again, boxes were needed for security and storage purposes. Finding early examples of these are quite rare.
Victorian and Edwardian examples of trinket boxes are far more common. This is because owning jewellery was a luxury until the Victorian era- let alone possessing so much a box was needed to store it all. Fine jewelry and other items became available to the masses after the industrial revolution due to the reduction in production costs. This led to a demand for trinket boxes, which were much smaller than jewelry boxes and therefore better suited to the needs of the middle class who did not yet possess an abundance of jewelry.
In Victorian households, collectables and other items of interested were also stashed inside these boxes. This is why they are known as trinket or keepsake boxes, rather than just jewelry boxes, although of course jewelry was also stored in them. Trinket boxes were produced in large numbers around this time. Many were lined with colored plush or velvet or rich wood. More elaborate designs had interior divisions and trays for rings and other pieces of jewellery. It was also common to see trinket boxes so small that they could only contain one item, such as a single ring. Ornate exteriors were created to reflect the value of the trinket boxes contents.
The Edwardian era saw the introduction of new styles of trinket box. These included small circular or oblong boxes...

The Flag of the United States by Harrison S. Kerrick, First Edition, 1925
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Kerrick, Harrison S. The Flag of the United States: Your Flag and Mine. Columbus: The Champlin Printing Co., 1925. First Edition, Second Printing. In original blue cloth boards, with gilt embossed title to the front board. New archival cloth slipcase.
Presented is a first edition, second printing of The Flag of the United States: Your Flag and Mine by Harrison S. Kerrick. This book was published by The Champlin Printing Co. in Columbus, Ohio. The first edition, first printing of this title was issued in February of 1925; this second printing was issued in April of 1925.
This book is a culmination of lifelong passion and respect for the American flag by the author Harrison S. Kerrick. The book begins by detailing the acts of continental and national Congresses, presidential proclamations, and Executive Orders that established the United States flag and Great Seal. He discusses the state laws pertaining to the American flag and argues the importance of a national flag code. Kerrick delves into the past history of flag design, including which European flags were popular in the early colonies, the early banners of the colonies, and the design elements that make up the stars and stripes as we know it today. He spends two chapters covering the facts and fictional myths surrounding our national flag. He then details how best to use the flag for personal and public use, inclduding how to create a flag, care for a flag, and the codes of conduct surrounding the proper display of the flag.
Lieutenant colonel Harrison Summers Kerrick (1873 – 1939) was an United States Army officer, teacher, and author. Kerrick was born in 1873 in Bloomington, Illinois, and attended Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1898, he enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving in the Spanish–American War, during which he was promoted to captain. He served as a field artillery officer in the Philippine–American War and in WWI, he served in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps from December 1917 to February 1918.
A lecturer and teacher, Kerrick was also the author of two books, Military and Naval America and The Flag of the United States. Passionate about American history and the symbolism of the American flag, Kerrick created the code of conduct on the proper handling and display of the United States flag, which was later adopted by the United States Congress...

“The Restaurant of the House of Representatives” Engraving by Harper's Weekly
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original wood engraving is titled “The Restaurant of the House of Representatives, Washington, DC.” It was published as a double-page image, in the August 12, 1893 issue of the famous 19th century newspaper Harper’s Weekly. The print was illustrated by Charles Stanley Reinhardt.
The House Restaurant, a unique part of life in the Capitol, has been in the same location since the 1857 Capitol Expansion. Congressional members’ busy work schedule made the availability of food on site a necessity. But the restaurant also served as an informal meeting spot for members to continue conversations and deal making.
