"Hoylake - Punch Bowl Hole" by James Michael Brown, Antique Golf Print, 1911
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a photogravure by James Michael Brown entitled "Hoylake-Punch Bowl Hole." The print depicts a 1910 foursomes match on the course, annotated in the bottom border "Mr. John Graham, Jnr., Mr. C.E. Dick, Mr. John Ball Amateur Champion, 1910, Mr. H.H. Hilton." The photogravure was published in the Life Association of Scotland calendar for that year. James Michael Brown (1853-1947) was an accomplished Scottish water-colorist, famous for his golfing scenes of British and Scottish courses, competitions, and players. Brown often had famous golfers of the time sit for him during competitions and he used these studies to help him later reproduce accurate likenesses of the players in his paintings. A keen golfer himself, Brown was a founder member of Mortonhall Golf Club in Edinburgh, where he was introduced to fellow member Dr. J. Turnbull Smith, the manager of the Life Association of Scotland. The Life Association of Scotland was established in Edinburgh, in 1838. It later formed the Insurance and Banking Golf Club, which then became the Duddingston Golf Club. In 1898, to mark the opening of the extended Club House, Smith commissioned Brown to paint a scene from an exhibition golf match at the Club. Brown's painting was then printed as the centerpiece of the 1899 Life Association of Scotland calendar. Although expensive to commission and publish, The Life Association of Scotland board justified the expense of the calendar by stating, “it must surely be the aim and desire of a Life Assurance Association to prolong the lives of those who take out policies with them and what sport is there that can compare with golf as a cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to…” The calendar was a great marketing and advertising success. As a result, Brown was then commissioned to paint an annual golfing picture for the club. Prints were made of the originals and issued in the calendar for each year. Brown painted 26 paintings for the Life Association and these all adorned the walls of the Edinburgh head office for many years. The paintings portray not only Lloyd George, the former Prime Minister at Walton Heath, but also a host of famous golfing personalities like Old Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, James Braid...

"U.S. Flag Behind Capitol" by Ron Sloan, Mixed Media Painting, 1985
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is “U.S. Flag Behind Capitol,” an original mixed-media painting by American artist Ron Sloan. The drawing shows an intricately detailed rendering of the front entrance to the United States Capitol building. Behind the Capitol is a large, waving American flag, set outside an orange-hued rounded rectangle. Sloan created this stunning artwork in February of 1985, for use on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 22 cent “Flag Over Capitol” stamp, issued in March of that same year. The painting depicts the iconic neoclassical building from the east orientation, with it’s dome towering overhead. Plans began in May of 1854 to build a new cast-iron dome for the United States Capitol. The then-architect of the Capitol Thomas Walter and his team were sold on the aesthetics of a new dome, as well as the utility of a fire-proof one. A year later, on March 3, 1855, President Franklin Pierce signed off on the appropriation of $100,000 to build the dome. Construction began in September of that year with the removal of the first dome raised by Charles Bulfinch. Over the next 11 years, the dome rose over the nation's capital. By December of 1863, Walter was able to set the bronze sculpture “Statue of Freedom” atop the dome. Thomas Walter resigned in 1865 and his replacement, Edward Clark, assumed the role of finishing the last aspects of the dome. Just over a month later, in January 1866, Constantino Brumidi, who had been hired to paint a fresco above the interior dome's oculus, removed the scaffolding used...

"Fort Worth" Vintage Delta Airlines Travel Poster by John Hardy, circa 1950s
By John Hardy (Artist)
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a vintage Fort Worth travel poster for Delta Airlines, issued in the 1950s. A very collectible poster, the composition shows a man in a cowboy hat, set against a bright yellow background. The poster was designed by John Hardy. Delta Air Lines was founded in 1925 as a fleet of crop-dusting planes in the Mississippi River Delta, which is how it earned its name. Passenger flights began in 1929 across the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas area and grew over time, with offered flights across the country and eventually to international destinations. In 1959, Delta was the first airline to fly the Douglas DC-8 and it was also the first to fly the Convair 880 jet in 1960; two large moments in aviation history. A major airline in the United States, Delta has always invested in promotional print advertising, hiring numerous artists for magazines and poster work. In the 1950s and 60s, Delta hired artist John Hardy to create a series of hand-pulled silkscreen posters, highlighting some of their top destinations. These portrait-oriented posters...

Harvard Radios vs. Princeton Aviators Vintage Football Poster, circa 1918

Below, the names of the teams are printed in yellow, with the date, location of the game, and ticket information printed in contrasting white. The United War Work Campaign’s logo is printed at bottom center. The logo is composed of a black star and the number 7, with the text “United War Work Campaign” encircling the star in a yellow ring. "Three Chiefs, Blackfoot, Montana" by Edward S. Curtis, Platinum Print, 1900
By Edward S. Curtis, 1868-1952
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a rare, platinum Master Exhibition Print of Edward Curtis’ The Three Chiefs. Typical of Curtis’ Master Exhibition Prints, this platinum print is double-mounted, signed, with an embossed copyright credit and date stamp. His numeric notation “52-00” is in the photographic negative. Curtis photographed The Three Chiefs during his two weeks on a Blackfoot reservation in the summer of 1900. The photograph depicts three Piegan men in traditional dress on horseback, situated next to a small stream with an expansive cloud-filled sky behind them. The Piegans were the largest group in the Blackfoot Confederacy and still retained a majority of their original culture when Curtis visited the tribe. It reportedly took Curtis several days to find the perfect prairie backdrop and riders for this photo, yet his patience paid off. The image was pivotal in enabling Curtis to form his vision for his next project - his ambitious 20 volumes “North American Indian”publication. This print is believed to be one of only three oversized, platinum Master Exhibition Prints of this image in existence. It was printed by Curtis specifically for his East Coast exhibition tour of 1905-1906. Curtis chose only a small number of what he believed to be his finest negatives to produce prints for the show. He never again mounted an exhibition of his work, nor produced such distinctive, large-format platinum prints. “The extraordinary rarity of The Three Chiefs becomes clearer when viewed in the context of other Master Exhibition Prints, principally the 108 in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, the largest collection in existence. The Museum, however, is missing a number of early, iconic images, including The Three Chiefs. It has long been assumed that these missing prints were held elsewhere, possibly in the collection of The New York Public Library. This theory has been substantiated by the Curtis scholar, Bruce Kapson, who unearthed a cache of letters from Curtis to J.P. Morgan and to Morgan's librarian, Ms. Bella da Costa Greene in the Pierpont Morgan Library archives in 2007. The correspondence establishes that 58 of the 100 prints in The New York Public Library's collection are actually Master Exhibition Prints, specifically selected by Curtis for J.P. Morgan as the best examples of his work. A typed letter, dated March 1907, from Ms. Greene to Curtis states: 'I enclose herewith a list of Indian photographs which you sent to Mr. J.P. Morgan'. The letter is accompanied by a handwritten list of 58 photographs, including The Three Chiefs (print number 52.) Morgan donated this group of prints to The New York Public Library in 1912.” (Christie’s Live Auction 1893 Catalog, 2007). Curtis’ platinum prints make up less than 1/2 of 1% of all of the work he created. Curtis’ platinum prints were created only for exhibition or direct sales to patrons and they were always made by Curtis himself. One significant dealer in Curtis prints...

"The Battle of Bunker's Hill, Near Boston" Engraving by James Mitan, 1801
By John Trumbull
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This dramatic Revolutionary War engraving of the Battle of Bunker Hill is after the famous 1785 oil-on-canvas by John Trumbull. Capturing the intensity of the battle, the engraving centers on Major John Small restraining a “lobster-back” from bayoneting Major General Joseph Warren. Warren lies mortally wounded in the midst of chaos around him. In the background, British forces are seen cresting the last defenses of the brave, yet green army of Colonial soldiers. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17, 1775, in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. The battle is named after Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Although it was the original objective of both the Colonial and British troops, the area was only peripherally involved in the battle. Rather, the majority of the combat took place on the adjacent Breed’s Hill. The battle pitted a more organized British force against a young and inexperienced American militia. Although considered a tactical victory for the British, it came at the cost of considerable casualties, including a large number of officers. The battle demonstrated that the inexperienced American militia was able to stand up to the British army troops in battle. The battle results discouraged the British from any further frontal attacks against well-defended front lines. American casualties were comparatively fewer, although their losses included Gen. Joseph Warren. During the battle, the patriot-turned-painter John Trumbull (1756-1843) was stationed in Roxbury on the far side of Boston, where he could hear the sounds of fighting. In late 1785, Trumbull decided to devote himself to the depiction of Revolutionary War scenes, a series of eight epic pictures. From the beginning, Trumbull intended for the paintings to be later engraved for sale. Trumbull began the oil-on-canvas of The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker’s Hill and The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack of Quebec, in the studio of Benjamin West in London. Bunker’s Hill was completed in March 1786; Trumbull started Attack of Quebec in February 1785 and finished it before he brought it to Paris in 1786. He then started The Declaration of Independence at Thomas Jefferson's house in Paris. As soon as Bunker’s Hill was completed, Trumbull searched for a suitable engraver in London. He was unsuccessful, as many British engravers were nervous about engraving an American battle...

1876 "Gettysburg, The Repulse of Longstreet's Assault." Engraving
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented here is an 1876 engraving of John B. Bachelder and James Walker’s Gettysburg. The Repulse of Longstreet’s Assault. The engraved scene depicts the decisive battle on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Researched by the photographer and topographer John B. Bachelder and painted by James Walker, the original painting was created in 1870. This detailed engraving was done by H. B. Hall Jr. and published by James Drummond Ball. Otherwise called Pickett’s Charge, the battle occurred on July 3, 1863. Pickett’s corp commander, Lieutenant General James Longstreet was placed in charge of the attack despite his hesitations.
