Patriotic Folding Fan with American Flag Motif
About the Item
Presented is a patriotic folding paper fan, with an American flag motif. The fan is painted with two small American flags at left and right and two larger crossed American flags at center. The star count of the two crossed larger fans differ between 46 and 48 stars, suggesting this fan was made sometime in the early to mid 20th century.
From the beginning of the 19th Century, fans commemorated national events, such as centennials, statehoods, inaugurations, or the birthdays of public figures. Americans who had imported European fans from the late 1600s to the mid-1800s, joined the fan-making fray soon after the Civil War and made-in-America fans began to acquire a following by 1867. Concurrently, advances in 19th Century printing technology brought the elaborately-designed, gilded, and illustrated fans within reach of the masses. Lithographed and printed fans imitated hand-drawn and hand-painted versions of earlier eras. Advertising fans also became popular promotional gimmicks that peaked at the turn of the century. These fans remained popular until the 1940s.

- Patriotic 48-Star American Flag Folding FanLocated in Colorado Springs, COPresented is a printed folding fan featuring the American Flag, which dates to the early 20th century. With 48 printed stars on the fan’s canton, the fan celebrates New Mexico and Arizona statehood. The fan’s design is completed with 13 alternating red and white stripes across its white sticks and guard. The 48-star flag had a fly date of 47 years, from July 4, 1912 to July 3, 1958. Prior to the introduction of the 48-star flag with the admission of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union in 1912, no legislation existed regarding the official proportions, sizes, and pattern for stars on the American flag. As a result, many Americans designed the starry canton of their homemade flags to their own whim, in medallion, spiral, and flower star configurations. Coinciding with the introduction of the 48 star flag in 1912, President William Howard Taft...Category

- 46-Star American Flag Printed in Drum Star ConfigurationLocated in Colorado Springs, COThis is an original 46-Star American parade flag, celebrating Oklahoma statehood. Each star on the flag's canton represents a state in the Union at the time. The official flag design would update every July 4th, to include any new states added to the Union in the past year. Oklahoma, the 46th state, entered the Union on November 16, 1907. As such, this 46–star flag was the official flag of the United States from July 4, 1908, until July 4, 1912. The silk flag has a dark blue canton with 46 white printed stars. The stars are printed in an 7-8-8-8-8-7 row configuration, or “Drum design.” The flag design is completed with 13 alternating red and white stripes, each stripe representing one of the original thirteen colonies. The land that comprises Oklahoma today was added to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Throughout the 19th century, the U.S. government relocated Indian tribes from the southeastern United States to the area, and by 1900, over 30 Indian tribes had been moved to what was originally called the Indian Territories. At the same time, ranchers in Texas began to move into the area in search of new pasture lands. Although stipulations in the Indian Relocation Act agreed that the land would forever be Indian Territory, the promise of fertile farmland trumped the government’s promise of sovereignty. On April 22, 1889, they opened the land to settlement by homesteaders, creating a land run in which settlers, called “Boomers,” were allowed to cross the Texas or Arkansas border at a particular hour to claim homesteads. Settlers who illegally crossed the border earlier to stake prime land were called “sooners,” which eventually became the state’s nickname. Wagons and the Santa Fe railroad carried cartloads of men and women to blank town sites and building plots, creating ten thousand-people communities in a matter of days. The following year, the region was further divided into Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory...Category
