An influential critic, writer and teacher, Philip Leslie Hale was an American Impressionist with an experimental, avant-garde approach to painting. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of author Edward Everett Hale and the younger brother of artist Ellen Day Hale, Philip was raised in a lively intellectual atmosphere. He probably received his first artistic training from his paternal aunt Susan Hale, after which he entered the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School under Edmund Tarbell, an American Impressionist painter who greatly influenced Hale’s style. A year later in 1884, the young artist moved to New York City, where he enrolled at the Art Students League and studied under Kenyon Cox and J. Alden Weir. There, his fellow students included Theodore Butler and William Howard “Peggy” Hart.
In 1887, Hale traveled to Paris with Theodore Butler and Susan Hale, where he furthered his artistic training at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian. During this first year, he studied with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, Gustave Boulanger and Henri Lucien Doucet...

In this highly detailed hand painted etching, artist Claus Sievert (American, 1949-2009) depicts a clown gazing into a handheld brass mirror holding a mask with matching face paint. The clown sits in what appears to be a dressing room surrounded with various costumes. This etching is uniquely hand painted in watercolor and gouache. The clown's eyes are hand drawn with added details throughout the face and hair.

Claus Sievert, (American, 1949–2009) nicknamed “The Tree Guy," was a German-born American printmaker and illustrator, who studied etching in an art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. He began his career as an art teacher in Germany, teaching printmaking, art history, advertising design, and visual communication, and became a full-time artist in 1981.
Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored.
Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars. He was known for his prints highlighting forms and the beauty of nature. His art was also featured in Ansel Adams Gallery, Muir Woods...

Melodie Provenzano lived and worked in New York City until 2020. After receiving her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1996, she freelanced for more than a decade painting window displays, showrooms and various commissioned projects for fashion companies including, Saks 5th Avenue, Donna Karan, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, Chanel and Hermes. At this time, she sharpened her drawing and painting skills while developing her fine art. Melodie has exhibited in group shows at The Brattleboro Museum, VT, The Chelsea Art Museum, NYC, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Great Barrington, MA, and solo shows at Lyons Wier Gallery, NYC, Goya Contemporary, Baltimore, MD, Carrie Secrist Gallery, Chicago, IL, The University School of Nashville, TN, and Nancy Margolis Gallery, NYC. The Ellsberg Trial was the beginning of a long career for Rose as a court reporter
Rose’s papers are in Special Collections of USC, The University of Southern California.

Rose's courtroom career began in 1973 with the trial of Daniel Ellsberg, the former defense analyst who released the Pentagon Papers regarding the Viet Nam War to the New York Times. (Rose received an Emmy Award nomination for his coverage of the Pentagon Papers trial.) Rose's sketches of this trial-- along with all those that would follow through the next twenty-five years-- appeared in television news broadcasts and newspapers all over the world. He saw himself as a reporter-- but with colored pencils and sketchpads as his tools. He tried to capture the emotions in the courtroom-- the tension, anger, and the body language that conveyed them. Bold nude pastel drawing by Albert Hutson (American, 1923-1994). A woman is reclined on a soft red surface, leaning up against a yellow pillow. The model is skillfully sketched, with quick but confident marks. Hutson has captured the character of the model in her expression and posture, both of which appear relaxed and natural.
Al Hutson retired from military service in 1974, moved to San Francisco, and enrolled in art school at the California College of Arts and Crafts. In 1978 he earned his BFA degree with distinction in drawing and painting. His work as a figurative artist was in the medium of pastel drawing, and he had an intense and abiding affinity for works on paper.
Signed, dated, and titled twice in the lower right corner ("Al Hutson Danielle 89")
Presented in a new off-white mat with foamcore backing.

Albert L. Hutson (American, 1923-1994) had two careers: first as a professional military officer, and second as an artist and member of the Board of the Graphic Arts Council in San Francisco. He was born in 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia, into a family with a long military tradition. His father and maternal grandfather were Annapolis graduates, and his paternal grandfather served in the Civil War. Colonel Hutson graduated from Staunton Military Academy in 1941 shortly after World War II began. He later earned an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Nebraska in the late 1960s. As a young second lieutenant in World War II, he served with the First Armored Division in the Italian Campaign, starting with the Battle of Anzio, and participated in the liberation of Rome. His interest in art began at this time when his commanding officer introduced him to Italian art.
