Charles Thomas Bale was born in Soho, London in 1849, the son of Thomas Bale, a basket maker. His older brother Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899) was an artist and picture restorer. He lived with his family in St James, Westminster and although little is known about his education, he would have undoubtedly received encouragement and drawing tuition from his brother. Bale started exhibiting in 1866 at the Institute of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, the same year he married Caroline Leathem. Together, they spent their married life in St Pancras. He specialized in still life paintings predominantly of fruit, but he frequently incorporated baskets, a homage to his family’s profession, as well as pottery, glass, and game. The first thing to ask about any Clementine is: is it authentic. Yes, there are fakes, and paintings by her son that are mistaken for (or presented as) hers. I won't touch anything by her that hasn't been verified, and this one has been verified by the #1 Clementine expert, Tom Whitehead. Of course it has my own guarantee as well; I have sold many Clementines. You can find fakes at auction houses (many of them outside of the New Orleans area) and other venues that don't ask questions, for a lot less money, but don't be fooled!
Now, about the painting. This one has a clear, wonderful provenance, which is unusual for these. Weddings were a common theme for Hunter, but this one has a specific history. It was gifted to Mr. and Mrs. Merrill by Ann and Jack Brittain in 1967 as a wedding present; then went by descent to the estate of Mary Jane "Cookie" Grace Merrill of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 18" x 24", slightly larger with frame. I will be including a free copy of the hardcover book (show in photo) by Art Shiver and Tom Whitehead about Clementine (Whitehead is the expert who verified this painting). After graduating from Simon Gratz High School, Maitin won a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts). A painter, printmaker, sculptor, muralist, graphic designer, political activist, and beloved teacher, Maitin headed the Visual Graphics Communication Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication from 1965–1972 and served on the board of Woodmere Art Museum from 1995–2004. He received a number of awards, including a 1968 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. He created murals and other public art for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University’s Kornberg School of Dentistry, the Please Touch Museum, and Hahnemann University Hospital, among others.

About the artist:
After growing up on the banks of the Dordogne , in 1975 he became a theater actor and musician in a group formed in Clermont-Ferrand . In the early 1980s , he moved to Marseille where he began his career as a painter, after observing a watercolor artist on the Place aux Huiles . Self-taught, he paints in his cellar, drawing inspiration from the painters Nicolas de Staël and William Turner . He sells his first watercolors on the quays of the Old Port of Marseille, and Cassis . He then moved to Paris, where he continued painting. Patrick Reault exhibits in Asia, the United States and France. The first of his lithographs was published in 1994 by Art Cadre Paris. The Hazan publish posters of his Provençal landscapes. He now exhibits permanently at Opera Gallery. Patrick Reault paints Provençal and colorful landscapes in his so-called Provençal period and proclaims his love for the skies and their spray in his maritime paintings. He used different painting techniques, having started with watercolor, then continued with oils for about ten years. Since then he has mainly used acrylic .

Russian-born Gussow trained at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. He also studied under Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
