Edmund Blampied was a painter, etcher, lithographer and sculptor. Born in 1886 to a family of three boys in St. Martin, Jersey, Blampied became interested in drawing at an early age. After visiting the studio of John Helier Lander in 1899, Blampied decided to make a career as an artist. In 1903 he went to London to attend Lambeth Art School, where he studied etching under Walter Seymour.
In 1905, he joined the Daily Chronicle as an artist. In that year he was awarded a scholarship to Bolt Court Scool of Photo-engraving and Lithography.
In 1912 he left the Chronicle and established his own studio. He earned a living by illustrating novels and short stories.
In 1913, he had his first exhibition at the Leicester Gallery in London. The following year he married Marianne Van Abbé.
During the 1920's, he became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. During the 1920s Blampied became a member of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers and exhibited in London to critical acclaim. He produced a folio of comic drawings in the 1930s which was published in New York in 1934 and another that was published in London in 1936. The Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum published a mongraph on his work. His London exhibitions were highly successful.
In 1938, he moved to Bulwarks, St.Aubin in Jersey, but at the onset of the Occupation, had to relocate to Route Orange, St. Brelade. remained there throughout World War II during the German Occupation, despite the fact that his wife was Jewish. During the Occupation he designed bank...

Tom Burckhardt’s work is a carnival of images jumbled and jostling each other in precarious nonsensical compositions. He uses lushly colored and patterned images from all kinds of sources that bounce between abstraction and representation. Images come from tool catalogs, paper and fabric patterns, funhouse painting, architectural details, stripes, dots and squiggles. It is as if Burckhardt is a cartoonist merrily channeling Ellsworth Kelly, Paul Feeley, Robert Therrien, and Myron Stout, among others. Like Red Grooms, for whom he worked as an assistant, Burckhardt ransacks his influences yet ends up with something unmistakably his own. This is an early 19th century engraved portrait of the industrialist and philanthropist Richard Reynolds by William Sharp after William Hobday. It was published in London by Rudolph Ackerman in 1817. The print is entitled "Richard Reynolds of the Society of Friends, Late of Bristol". This three-quarter length portrait of Reynolds depicts him seated, directed to right, looking towards the viewer. He is holding an open book, wearing a plain suit. A curtain in the background is pulled to the left, revealing bookshelves. Some of the books are labelled 'Addison & Watts' 'Kempis & Fenelon' 'Milton & Cowley' etc. The inscription above the portrait reads: "When the eye saw him it blessed him". The lettering below the image reads: "Richard Reynolds of the Society of Friends, Late of Bristol; Whose Life and Fortune were devoted to the Glory of God by relieving the humble in Distress.', This plate is dedicated by Permission to his Royal Highness, the Prince Regent by his most devoted very humble servant William Hobday."
This engraving is printed on thick paper. The sheet measures 16" high and 12" wide. It is adhered to an archival backing in the upper left corner. There is mild discoloration and toning in the margins, but it does not involve the image.
Richard Reynolds (1735-1816) was a prominent member of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, in the 18th and 19th centuries. He was born into a wealthy family in Bristol, England, and inherited a successful copper smelting, iron manufacturing business from his father. Despite his privileged upbringing, Reynolds was known for his deep concern for the poor and his commitment to social justice. He used his wealth and influence to support a range of philanthropic causes, including the abolition of slavery, the improvement of working conditions for miners and factory workers, and the provision of education for the poor. About the artist -
German/American artist: b. 1937, Peter Max spent his childhood in Shanghai. From China, the family went to Tibet for a year, and then on to Israel. Peter Max's family's odyssey continued to Paris, and finally, at the age of 16, Max arrived in the United States. Peter Max began his art studies in New York at the Art Student's League and continued at the Pratt Institute and School of Visual Arts. Peter Max, recognised throughout the world and a well-known name in America, is famous for his new age style, cosmic imagery and multi-colored blends. During the late 1960's and early 70's, Peter Max's colorful award winning art reached millions of people. Peter Max's paintings, drawings, sculpture and limited edition graphics have been exhibited in major museums throughout the world.
