From 1959-61 she attended the University of California, Los Angeles before coming to England in 1961 to attend the Courtauld Institute and then the Slade School of Fine Art from 1962-3. In 1963, whilst a student at the Slade Haworth met Peter Blake at a party and they married in July of that year. Haworth moved into Blake’s Chiswick flat and she set up a studio alongside his where she produced her life-size textile figures. Adrian Heath (1920-1992) Abstract Study III (1975) Acrylic and pencil on paper 22x22cm Heath was born in Burma in 1920 and arrived in England aged five. In 1938 he studied art under Stanhope Forbes at Newlyn and later at the Slade School of Art. While serving in WWII, he was captured and placed in a prisoner-of-war camp in Bavaria. Heath attempted to escape from the camp but was recaptured and placed in solitary confinement; this isolation proved crucial to the development of his artistic style, as he spent much of his time there experimenting with abstract forms. When released from confinement, Heath befriended a fellow prisoner of war: Terry Frost. Together they explored the methods of painting which they had developed during their time in the camps, and following the war both became celebrated artists. We have several Terry Frost pieces available too. In 1949 and 1951, Heath returned to Cornwall. He spent time with artists like Ben Nicholson, Victor Pasmore, and Anthony Hill...

Be it drawing, sketching, cooking, painting or photography, he always liked to do something no one has ever thought of, by adding his signature element to the task. To achieve this, Sumit creates his own painting tools to go with the techniques he thinks of. “I usually discover different techniques to paint and construct my own tools to put the ideas into action. I pick up a theme and make a series of paintings on them. When the technique gets repetitive, I wait for another inspiration to strike, and I move onto the next series,” professes Sumit. He does not have any ‘patented style’ as he terms it to be mere repetition and limits an artist’s creativity. He adds on saying that his works are not entirely skill based as a skill needs to be perfected by doing it repeatedly; “My art is more about the excitement of how beautiful strokes and patterns can emerge from experimentation, I believe in having fun in my studio and my art is end result of it.” He also believes in impulsive acts of making art and its surprising results; “For me it is not about the number of hours spent in making one artwork or extreme skills of perfection. Its mostly impulsive with a playful skill that comes along involving certain movements, measures, materials and tools which leads to a satisfying end result.” Education MSc.
