This superb Dutch Golden Age portrait is attributed to circle of Dutch artist Wybrand Simonsz de Geest. Painted in 1666 it is a full length portrait of a young William Stonestreet. He is holding the paw of a clipped little white dog with drapes and clouds beyond. (It was common practise to dress young boys in dresses up to the age of about 6 or 7 when they were 'britched' or wore britches). An excellent example of Dutch Golden Age art that wouldn't look out of place in a museum.
Wm Stonestreet 1666, Prebend of Selsely is inscribed top left.
Provenance. Berkshire estate.
Condition. Oil and canvas, 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 52 inches by 44 inches and in good condition.
Wybrand Simonsz. de Geest (16 August 1592 – c. 1661) was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter from Friesland in the Netherlands. Wybrand de Geest was born and died at Leeuwarden. He learned painting from his father, Simon Juckesz, a stained glass worker. He studied later with Abraham Bloemaert. From 1614 to 1618 he travelled in France and Italy on a Grand Tour. In 1616 he met up with Leonard Bramer in Aix-en-Provence. While in Rome he became a member of the painters' circle known as the Bentvueghels. Edouard Julien was an accomplished French painter and lithographer, and long-term curator of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi. As a scholar of Toulouse-Lautrec he became an art writer who was sought after by publishers all over the world.
Julien was born in Albi, in the Occitanie region of France in 1883. He had an uncle who was a painter and his parents ran a printing house which specialised in art editions and the printing of lithographs. This would have given the young Edouard a taste for art and a sound understanding of artistic techniques. At 17 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and studied there throughout 1900 and 1901. He then returned to Albi and took care of the family business, although he also pursued his love of art by working as an artist. By 1903 he was at the Academy in Albi, founded by Bernard-Joseph Artigue, where he became friends with the artist Henri Gourc. In 1928 Julien left Albi again for Paris where he enrolled in the Julian Academy, but he was quickly told that he was an artist, not a student and that they had nothing to teach him about the technique of painting. He therefore rented a studio and worked hard, making friends and exhibiting his works with success.
As an artist Julien loved working in the open air, and his works showed extreme sensitivity. He travelled widely within France to work, and particularly loved the Basque Country, where he met his wife. He also travelled to paint the magical landscapes of Spain, Flanders and North Africa.
At some point Julien returned to Albi, which was also the birthplace of another now more famous French artist whom he admired, namely Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This artist was to feature most prominently in the professional life of Edouard Julien.
In 1922 the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum was inaugurated in the prestigious setting of the Palais de la Berbie in Albi. This 13th century building was originally the Bishop’s Palace of Albi Cathedral, next to which it stands. It is dedicated mainly to the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and, thanks to a bequest from his parents, houses the largest public collection in the world devoted to this artist. Paul Desmond Fitzgerald (1 August 1922 – 24 June 2017) was an Australian portrait painter who painted a vast array of distinguished persons.
Fitzgerald was born in the family home, in the Melbourne suburb of Kew, the second son of Frank Fitzgerald and Margaret née Poynton. Frank Fitzgerald was a journalist with The Age for approximately ten years and about eight years with The Argus. He periodically filled the roles of general reporting, leader writing, political correspondent, art critic, music critic, theatre critic and motoring editor. A Catholic, Fitzgerald was educated at Xavier College in Melbourne (1933–1939) and studied for five years at the National Gallery School (1940–43 and 1946–47), interrupted for three and a half years in the Army during World War II (1943–46).
When he was painting away from his studio in Melbourne, he usually lived with the subjects of his portraiture. He lived and painted overseas on commissioned portraits twice each year since 1958 including America, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Jersey, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Hawaii and Bermuda. He also painted throughout Australia.
