The Scales of Justice: An English Criminal Judge in Traditional Robes, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
The image is labeled "Juge criminel anglais," which translates to "English Criminal Judge." The figure depicted is wearing a long, flowing robe with a blue undergarment and a red cape, which is indicative of the traditional robes worn by English judges, especially in higher courts. The judge also wears a white coif, which was a typical head covering for English judges and serjeants-at-law. He carries a staff, which may symbolize authority or the office of the judiciary. His belt is richly decorated, suggesting the importance and high status of his position within the legal system. The robes and coif show significant detail, such as the fur lining on the cape and the gold fastening on the belt, which alludes to the formality and solemnity of the judicial office. The judge's expression is stern and somber, reflecting the serious nature of his role in adjudicating criminal matters. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting. Egg yolk helps to create a durable and long-lasting color that adheres well to various surfaces. In the context of the print from 1847, it's less likely that egg whites or yolks were used directly on the print, as by that time, commercial printing processes would have been more advanced and less reliant on such manual methods. However, if this print is a representation of an earlier style or is meant to mimic the appearance of hand-painted manuscripts...

The fine lines and precise detailing of the engravings highlight the hieroglyphic inscriptions on Cleopatra's Needle and the ornate Corinthian capital atop Pompey's Pillar. Sartorial Elegance of Kaluga: A Merchant and a Woman in Traditional Attire, 1814
Located in Langweer, NL
The two engravings illustrate the regional dress of inhabitants from Kaluga, Russia, highlighting the unique characteristics of their traditional attire: 1. **A Woman from Kalouga in Her Summer Dress:** This engraving would depict a woman dressed in the light, comfortable attire appropriate for the warmer season. Her outfit includes a long, flowing skirt and a bodice or blouse that is both decorative and practical. The woman's dress is adorned with local patterns and embroidery unique to the Kaluga region, reflecting the summer palette and style of the time. 2. **A Merchant of Kalouga:** The engraving of the merchant would typically show a man in the attire suitable for his profession, which includes practical yet presentable clothing. A merchant's outfit consists of a long coat, vest, and trousers, along with accessories such as a hat and boots. The attire would reflect his status and need for mobility and comfort as he conducts his business. William Alexander’s "Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Russians" serves as a significant historical compendium, capturing the essence of early 19th-century Russian dress...

Medieval Matrimony: A Union in the Gothic Halls, Hand-Colored in 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
This print from "Costume Di Moyen Age" (Costumes of the Middle Ages) published in Paris in 1847, depicts a scene from the medieval era. The image features a group of individuals in an indoor setting, likely a part of a noble class, given the richness of their attire and the elegant interior. A central figure in a blue cape with a red lining is in a dialogue or exchange with a person wearing a green and yellow patterned garment. They both are in the foreground and appear to be the primary subjects of this interaction. Behind them, there are other individuals who seem to be part of the scene, including a person in red robes who is possibly a clergyman, given the context and attire, which resembles ecclesiastical clothing. The background is adorned with Gothic architectural elements such as pointed arches and intricate detailing. Statues or figures are set within the architectural framework, suggesting a church or a similarly important building. The use of bright, primary colors is notable, and the attention to the detail in the clothing suggests a significant event, possibly a ceremony like a marriage, as indicated by the word "Casamiento" (meaning marriage in Spanish) at the bottom of the print. Overall, the print is rich in historical clothing...

Stunning Hand-Colored Antique Bird Print of a Female Jacamar by Barraband, c1805
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Le Jacamar femelle, No. 48'. This print originates from "Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers, Suivie de Celle des Toucans et des Barbus" by Francois Levillant. Barraband pinxt. Gremillier Sculpt. De l'Imprimerie de Rousset. Jacques Barraband (or Pierre-Paul Barraband) (1767? (baptized 1768), Aubusson (Creuse), France–1 October 1809, Lyon) was a French zoological and botanical illustrator, renowned for his lifelike renderings of tropical birds. His pictures were based on mounted specimens and his illustration was considered the most accurate ones made during the early 1800s. Barraband was born to Jacques Barraband and Marie-Anne Bebit in 1767 (or 1768) and was baptized on August 31, 1768 at the church of Sainte-Croix in Aubusson. His father worked in the local tapestry factory and the son also worked there briefly after studying art at the local school, which was famed for producing several artists of note, including Francis Roby de Faureix and Etienne de La Seiglière de La Cour. He later moved to Paris, working at tapestry and carpet stores on rue de la Huchette and studying art at l’Academie royale de peinture under Joseph-Laurent Malaine. During the French exposition of 1798, he produced some paintings for the carpet manufacturers Gobelins and Savonnerie and for the porcelain makers Dihl and Gerhard. He also made illustrations of insects for the French naturalist Sonnini and illustrated a book by Fournier on Egypt. He then produced a series of watercolours of birds...
