GBG 1001-17
By Steven Kinder
Located in Fairfield, CT
Steven Kinder (b. 1956, Queens, NY) was trained at Cooper Union and has been making drawings, paintings, and large-scale installation for over 40 years. His recent work advances his interest in various forms of dynamic tension and movement found in nature, specifically tidal bores, surges or whirlpools. In his new work, the artist further explores tension and balance between the intuitive, gestural mark and the intellectual organization of form. His 9 inch square drawing series, a format he has been using for years, have now become templates for his paintings. In the drawings Kinder works out how form and color can come together and break apart while maintaining a compositional integrity inside a small space. His habit of placing ¾ inch blue painter’s tape around the edges of his designated area to serve as a border has now become part of the picture plane. The tape’s slightly elevated hard edge creates a physical barrier for the paint but adds a beautiful collage dimension as well. Its rough textured surface catches and slows the end of the brush stroke, softening the color and extending its energy over the intended border. Like a tidal pool at the base of a waterfall, the tape is both an extension of the thing, and a separate thing itself. When Kinder translates the small drawings onto larger canvas, there is a palpable and necessary shift of pressure, color intensity and rhythm. He does not project the drawing on the canvas, nor does he use graphs. Instead he simply places it next to the canvas and refers to the drawing as an architectural blue print...

Hudson Yards High Line
By Roland Kulla
Located in Fairfield, CT
Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC & LA -- For the past dozen years or so I’ve focused on bridge elements by selecting portions of bridge structures and painting segments in a realist style. Previous shows at the Billis Gallery have featured New York area bridges using this approach that I call “abstract realism”. This show, New York City Transit, differs in several ways. First, I’ve expanded my focus to include different aspects of transportation in New York City. There are still plenty of bridges, in fact five different views of the Manhattan Bridge. But I’ve added trains to the mix as well as the MTA. A number of the paintings include the interaction of trains and bridges. Pedestrians are given focus too in scenes from the High Line. Second, not only has the subject matter expanded, many of the works provide a more panoramic treatment. There are still some closely cropped subjects that are typical of my previous style. But in several works my view has widened to place the transit elements in their urban context. Third, the transitory aspects of nature are captured as well. The atmospheric effects of sky and water and light and shade create dynamic contrasts to the fixed structures. The bridges in particular leap across the water against dramatic skies. Taken as a whole, New York City Transit takes you from the details to the big picture. It also captures the dynamism of the man-made structures in their dramatic natural context. Roland Kulla September, 2016 Acrylic on canvas, cityscape, painting, New York City, Manhattan, High Line, Hudson Yards

Magnolia 1
By Liz Barber
Located in Westport, CT
Liz Barber's organic abstract paintings are layered bursts of energy inspired by nature’s movement. Forms and lines fall into a sea of emotion. Shapes and reflections drift into volumetric configurations. She pours colors onto the canvas and watches what happens. Intuitively, she then edits. Barber uses a form of mixed media which allows for more creative freedom and gives the materials a voice. This painting makes a beautiful pair with the Liz Barber painting, "Magnolia 2...

Reflection
Located in Greenwich, CT
b. 1960 Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design. Her work is rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, the Canadian Group of Seven, to her artist-teachers Paul Resika, Robert de Niro Sr., and finally, the contemporary artist, Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum. It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting – of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…” Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena Rubenstein Award recipient, Higgins earned her MFA from Parsons School of Design, where she studied with Leland Bell, Paul Resika, Albert Kresch and Robert deNiro...
