Life Magazine Satirical Society Cartoon Illustration
Located in Wilton Manors, FL
Barbara Shermund (1899-1978). Society Satirical Cartoon, ca. 1940s. Gouache on heavy illustration paper, image measures 17 x 14 inches; 23 x 20 inches in matting. Signed lower left. Very good condition but matting panel should be replaced. Unframed. Provenance: Ethel Maud Mott Herman, artist (1883-1984), West Orange NJ. For two decades, she drew almost 600 cartoons for The New Yorker with female characters that commented on life with wit, intelligence and irony. In the mid-1920s, Harold Ross, the founder of a new magazine called The New Yorker, was looking for cartoonists who could create sardonic, highbrow illustrations accompanied by witty captions that would function as social critiques. He found that talent in Barbara Shermund. For about two decades, until the 1940s, Shermund helped Ross and his first art editor, Rea Irvin, realize their vision by contributing almost 600 cartoons and sassy captions with a fresh, feminist voice. Her cartoons commented on life with wit, intelligence and irony, using female characters who critiqued the patriarchy and celebrated speakeasies, cafes, spunky women and leisure. They spoke directly to flapper women of the era who defied convention with a new sense of political, social and economic independence. “Shermund’s women spoke their minds about sex, marriage and society; smoked cigarettes and drank; and poked fun at everything in an era when it was not common to see young women doing so,” Caitlin A. McGurk wrote in 2020 for the Art Students League. In one Shermund cartoon, published in The New Yorker in 1928, two forlorn women sit and chat on couches. “Yeah,” one says, “I guess the best thing to do is to just get married and forget about love.” “While for many, the idea of a New Yorker cartoon conjures a highbrow, dry non sequitur — often more alienating than familiar — Shermund’s cartoons are the antithesis,” wrote McGurk, who is an associate curator and assistant professor at Ohio State University’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. “They are about human nature, relationships, youth and age.” (McGurk is writing a book about Shermund. And yet by the 1940s and ’50s, as America’s postwar focus shifted to domestic life, Shermund’s feminist voice and cool critique of society fell out of vogue. Her last cartoon appeared in The New Yorker in 1944, and much of her life and career after that remains unclear. No major newspaper wrote about her death in 1978 — The New York Times was on strike then, along with The Daily News and The New York Post — and her ashes sat in a New Jersey funeral...

San Francisco Cable Car WPA Artist Adolf Dehn Modernist Art Gouache Oil Painting
By Adolf Dehn
Located in Surfside, FL
ADOLF ARTHUR DEHN (American, 1895-1969) San Francisco Bay Area street scene, with Trolley, Streetcar, Cable Car with bay and Alcatraz Island in background. Hand signed LRC. Sight 19" x 15", overall 23" x 19". Adolf Dehn (November 22, 1895 – May 19, 1968) was an American artist known mainly as a lithographer. Throughout his artistic career, he participated in and helped define some important movements in American art, including regionalism, social realism, and caricature. A two-time recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, he was known for both his technical skills and his high-spirited, droll depictions of human foibles. Adolph Dehn was born in 1895 in Waterville, Minnesota. He began creating artwork at the age of six, and by the time of his death had created nearly 650 images. Dehn went to the Minneapolis School of Art (known today as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design), where he met and became a close friend of Wanda Gag. In 1917 he and Gág were two of only a dozen students in the country to earn a scholarship to the Art Students League of New York. He was drafted to serve in World War I in 1918, but declared himself a conscientious objector and spent four months in a guardhouse detention camp in Spartanburg, SC and then worked for eight months as a painting teacher at an arm rehabilitation hospital in Asheville, NC. Later, Dehn returned to the Art Students League for another year of study and created his first lithograph, The Harvest. In 1921 Dehn's lithographs were featured in his first exhibition at Weyhe Gallery in New York City. From 1920 to 1921 in Manhattan, he was connected to New York's politically left-leaning activists. In 1921, he went to Europe. In Paris and Vienna he belonged to a group of expatriate intellectuals and artists, including Andrée Ruellan, Gertrude Stein, and ee cummings...

Measures: 56-1/4" x 37", frame measures 61-1/4" x 42" This is a very large piece Jean Chaleye (French 1878 - 1960) was active, lived in France. Jean Chaleye is known for Landscape, still life and coastal view painting. Considered one of the most important Post Impressionist painters. Jean-Baptiste Chaleye, known as Joannès Chaleyé, was born to working class parents in Saint Etienne in the middle of the 19th Century. He began his career as a commercial engraver at the age of fourteen, which he continued until 1899 when he took a trip to England. He returned the following year to do his military service and on completion returned to the city of his birth. He began his artistic training in Saint Etienne and then at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon in 1896. He was then offered the opportunity to complete his training in Paris. In 1899, he joined the class of Louvrier de Lajolais at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and was also a student of Fernand Cormon at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Through Cormon he me Andre Derain, Mary Cassatt and Dunoyer de Segonzac and a number of ther Barbizon painters influenced by Edouard Manet. Jean Chaleye's life is divided between his attraction for painting and his passion for the art of lace. As early as 1902, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français and the Salon des indépendants. As a renowned painter of flowers, several museums acquired his paintings such as the cities of Puy-en-Velay, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Gall in Switzerland. In 1903, Louvrier de Lajolais offered him to go to the provinces to teach the art of lacemaking at the École pratique de commerce et d'industrie du Puy-en-Velay. He then set out to replace the traditional geometric and repetitive designs by creations with supple and light forms, inspired by local flora. He devoted his entire life to highlighting the delicate art of lace making, participating in various competitions and international exhibitions during which he won several awards. Appointed director of the National Superior School of Arts and Textile Industries of Roubaix in 1930 but also artistic director of the school of laces of Bailleul, he favors the obtaining by this last one of the Grand Prix at the Exhibition of Brussels in 1935. Promoted to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor in 1937, his involvement in the recognition of the know-how of the Velay lace industry is recognized. A renowned painter, one recognizes in his paintings as in his lace drawings all the delicacy and the love which he carries to the flowers and to the nature in general. He died in 1960 in Puy-en-Velay. After his death, the house in which he had lived in Puy was turned into the Musée Chaleyé. International exhibitions In 1904, he had the "Lace" section participate in the exhibition at the Galliera Museum in Paris, which presented the lace made according to his ideas. In 1905, he created the fan leaf for the lacemaker Oudin, which was purchased by the Saint-Gall Museum in Switzerland. He participated in various international competitions and exhibitions, during which he received several awards: International Exhibition of Liège (1905): he created a fan leaf decorated with Virginia creeper which took part in this exhibition. French Lace Competition (1907): the “Lace” section, the work of which he directed, won three distinctions: first prize (1000 Francs), second prize in collaboration, and for his personal work, the prize of the Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts. Franco-British Exhibition in London (1908): gold medal for a braid of fuchsias signed by Chaleyé. Brussels World's Fair (1910): a grand prize was won by three laces signed by Chaleyé (landscape with grisaille effect, a cockfight in colour and a cushion with chestnut decorations with spider webs). Chaleyé also won a gold medal for his collaboration. International Exhibition in Turin (1911): he had produced new drawings which had earned him a gold medal for his collaboration. International Exhibition of Lyon (1914): he was awarded a medal for his collaboration. Participation in the “Lace” and “Cabinetmaking” sections, of which Chaleyé directed the work and designed the models for this exhibition. Painting by Jean Chaleyé exhibited at the Crozatier Museum in Puy-en-Velay Alongside his artistic involvement in lacemaking, he exhibited his paintings at the Salon des artistes français from 1902. At the Salon des indépendants, one of his works was selected by the Commission des beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris and several museums have acquired his paintings: the cities of Le Puy, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, Saint-Gall (Switzerland). Seven of them are still exhibited at the Musée Crozatier in Puy-en-Velay. A renowned painter of flowers, he enjoyed his main successes in the Lyon and Saint-Etienne regions where he exhibited mainly. Outside the Synagogue Russian Judaica Oil Painting
By Emmanuel Snitkovsky
Located in Surfside, FL
This piece came from the collection of the Bezalel Art Gallery on the Lower East Side of New York City. Emmanuil Snitkovsky is an internationally known artist, sculpture and poet. Emmanuil Snitkovsky was born into a family of artists and scholars from the Odessa Art College in Russia. Immersed in the traditions of Russia art, he approaches form, line, space and color with relentless vision and impeccable technique. Two highly successful artists, the husband and wife team of Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky have exhibited a selection of eight large Judaic paintings at the Chabad Chassidic Art Institute (Chai Gallery) in Crown Heights. Three of those paintings are truly singular visions of Jewish Art that cause us to stop and reassess our preconceptions about the meaning and importance of their subjects. Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky were both born in the Ukraine in the 1930′s. Emmanuil was trained in Odessa in public monument art, and Janet majored in fashion at the Lvov Decorative Art Institute. After both narrowly survived the devastation of the Second World War in Stalin’s Russia, they began to collaborate on state sponsored art works in 1962. For ten years, they worked on grandiose public sculptural projects to commemorate the fallen Russian heroes of the Second World War in Moscow, Kiev, Tula and Kazan. They were exemplary Soviet Realists working for the Soviet regime. Eventually, this career became untenable for them, both as artists and as Jews, when they clashed with Soviet officialdom over a commission to commemorate the Babi-Yar massacre. The Soviets refused to acknowledge this massacre of 100,000 Jews and eventually suppressed the memorial. In 1978, Emmanuil and Janet arrived in New York and began to recreate their artistic lives. In the ensuing 25 years, they have been quite successful, exhibiting widely in the United States and Europe. They have nurtured a hybrid style of painting and sculpture called “Renaissance Revival” combining contemporary and classical subjects in a stylized realism that evokes both the American regionalist Thomas Hart Benton and the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli. The works are highly proficient, polished, and commercial productions in a quirky decorative style. They have continued to accept sculptural projects that have not shied away from kitschy realistic sculptures of Charlie Chaplin as “The Kid,” The Little Tramp” and Buster Keaton as “Cameramen.” In some ways, they have appropriated American culture just as they once accepted Soviet culture. Janet, a graduate of the Lvov College, was invited- by virtue of the high honors she achieved there- to matriculate at the Lvov University of Art. Such an opportunity is extremely rare for anyone, particularly for someone of Jewish descent. Their works of art are included in collections of the Japanese Imperial Family...

Wedding Day - Norman Rockwell Americana - Female Illustrator
By Lorraine Fox
Located in Miami, FL
Recently, women artists have been soaring in price to millions of dollars. In many cases, many of these women were quite obscure. For example, recently acknowledged Gertrude Abercrombie, a naive surrealist artist, has recently seen her paintings rise to the area of $400K. Lorraine Fox, who is a consummate female artist/ illustrator whose work rivals any of the recently anointed female stars is still an unknown quantity. She has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and is in the collection of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, and she is a member of the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut along with Norman Rockwell, Today she is relatively unknown and completely off the radar of the so-called art establishment. Wedding Day is a wonderful example of her mid-century, somewhat naive style. The work is signed lower right and was exhibited at the Brandywine River...
