Warren McArthur Executive Arm Chair for Chrysler 1947
Located in Camden, ME
An excellent example of a Warren McArthur post war chair design.
This arm chair was specifically designed for Chrysler Headquarters in Detroit in a limited run of possibly 200 chairs.
Later other chairs of this design were deaccessioned by Chrysler and used as a club chair at one of Detroit's more exclusive golf clubs.
This chair fortunately was not redone in golf motive upholstery and retains its original McArthur upholstery, its original DC-3 ash trays and the attachment bars which were used to create auditorium style seating arrangements when necessary for Chrysler presentations.
One interesting design element in this chair reflect advancements the ergonomic studies that McArthur instituted earlier in his successful attempts to revolutionize the comfort and strength of the aircraft seat for our fighting men during World War II. As described in the seminal 2004 catalogue by the Vitra Design Museum "Air World" McArthur was doing ergonomic testing in the late 1930's. This chair design incorporates an aircraft seat cushion with no sag springs {(see underside photo showing chromate covered seat frame) (green protective coating only used by McArthur for aircraft seating frames)}which was found to reduce fatigue in airmen seated for long flights.
It also uses a channeled back rest from another aircraft seating, and DC -3, Dc-4 arm rests with ash tray inserts also chromate coated and left over from war production parts.
Is this a green statement by Warren McArthur or one of economic necessity as his business was nearing the end and his use of surplus aircraft parts was an attempt to economize?
Whatever his motivation he produced a very comfortable and stylish seat for a corporation that he had a personal relationship with from when he represented Dodge...
