Portal 23 #4 (sculptural, layered, painting, abstract, patterns, organic)
By Francie Hester
Located in New York, NY
Portal 23 #4 (2023) Acrylic, wax, and aluminum leaf on paper. 8" x 8" unframed 15" x 15" framed Hester’s practice is a meditation on both her personal and our collective pasts. Throughout her works, Hester consistently acknowledges the seemingly opposing forces that build our daily lives—creating an atmosphere abounding with both elegy and rejuvenation. The artist’s technique of painting on each substrate—paper, plexiglass and aluminum—goes far beyond conventional brushwork. Through a painstaking and physical process, she applies and removes acrylic paint with the use of sanders, hammers, routers and drills, in a continual process of building, breaking and rebuilding. Surprisingly, even the works on paper are sanded. Surfaces are mottled and textured, scraped and punctured. Layer upon layer of striated, thick colors dance astride more delicate patterned areas, created with collaged bits of metal leaf and complex cross-hatching marks. Yet, strikingly, the eye finds places of rest as colors and patterns conjoin harmoniously, and chaos and control share spaces. Painting / Silver/ Texture / Work on paper / Abstract / About the Artist: Francie Hester works principally on sculpted aluminum, steel and plexiglass, in a process-based practice that builds pixelated and vibrant pigments in deep layers with patterns of drips, grids and fragmented shapes that are then deconstructed through sanding, scraping, drilling and cutting to reveal the finished, textured surfaces. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Jordan, Ulaanbaatar, Ireland, and Costa Rica, and in solo exhibitions with Susan Eley...

By Farida Hughes
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: For ten years I lived in Minnesota and had a studio in Northeast Minneapolis, which I loved. When I moved to the city, I began to paint compositions of abstracted crowds of people as imagined from above. Can you envision this painting as a large crowd of people? You can hang this either horizontally or vertically. A little impressionistic in expression, this painting also reminds me of a garden of happy flowers. Keywords: color, abstract, movement, motion, circles, yellow, bubbles, gray, orange, colorful, texture, busy Details about the piece: - This is a hand painted, original painting - Created in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - Artist now lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland, USA - Professional grade oil paints and ArtResin on wood panel - Other materials include professional grade watercolor and oil pastel - Wood Panel with Birchwood face and 1.5" Poplar wood cradle - Ready to hang with wires and D ring - Signed on the back - Certificate of authenticity and care sheet included with original Artist Biography: Farida Hughes’ lively and intriguing abstract paintings take their inspiration from the gathering and dispersing of crowds, group relationships, and shared histories and stories of people. She developed her abstract mixed media style, and methods of mixing oil paint with resin, after many years of painting with oil paint and experimenting with oil painting mediums. Hughes studied Studio Art and English at Fordham University in New York and received an MFA in Painting from the University of Chicago. Her work is exhibited widely in galleries and art centers and collected nationally. She is currently represented by Walker Fine Art...

Artist Commentary: This painting is from my "Common Threads" series comprised of abstract paintings that metaphorically allude to the links, or threads, tying people, groups, and communities together across differences. We often find ourselves faced with addressing the differences between people, via identity, politics, economic stature, family origin, and more. Real entwined thread, or pulled lengths of wool, in the Common Threads paintings are a metaphor for commonly shared experiences bridging these different identity issues. Shared experiences bind people and their histories together in intimately interesting ways. I am working to use these links and metaphoric threads as a means to find common ground and harmony. Keywords: abstract, pastel colors, linear, lines, thread, calm, meditative, circles, pink, green, blue, ivory, antique white Details about the piece: - This is a hand painted, original painting - Created in Baltimore, Maryland, USA - Professional grade oil paints and ArtResin on wood panel - Other materials include professional grade watercolor, oil pastel, and thread - Wood Panel with Birchwood face and 1.5" Poplar wood cradle - Ready to hang with wires and D ring - Signed on the back - Certificate of authenticity and care sheet included with original Artist Biography: Farida Hughes’ lively and intriguing abstract paintings take their inspiration from the gathering and dispersing of crowds, group relationships, and shared histories and stories of people. I Hope He Knows the Way Home, Original Contemporary Narrative Wooden Sculpture 14" x 24" x 50" (HxWxD) Wood, String, Plastic, Clear Finish This wooden sculpture by artist Todd McCollister features a sleek and modern design with smooth, undulating platforms that meet at dynamic angles that complement the organic figure of the elephant that is descending the staircase. Listening at the Cliffside, Original Contemporary Wooden Mixed Media Sculpture
Located in Boston, MA
Listening at the Cliffside, Original Contemporary Wooden Mixed Media Sculpture 20" x 65" x 42" (HxWxD) Wood, Stone, String, Brass Bell, Glass Bottle, Clear Finish In this highly conceptual work, artist Todd McCollister has combined a myriad of elements to depict a narrative scene that makes the viewer pause. Inspired by historical elements, the work explores space, structure, and sound. A small boat-shaped after shave bottle serves as a floating element beneath a brass bell. A wall of undulating wood creates the cliffside, while more delicate beams of wood jut behind the piece, somehow evoking both fragility and the integrity of industrial engineering at work. Artist Commentary: This piece started as a reference to the "acoustic mirror" listening stations on the southeast coast of England. These huge concrete parabolic reflectors focus sound to a small point. During the second world war, the British posted soldiers at the focus of each one, where they would listen for German boats...
