We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around.
Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...

Flower still life with dahlias, in beautiful, vibrant colors. Oil on canvas. The round format is very unusual. Frame and canvas are an original whole. The painting is signed in the paint on the lower right and dated, 1934. The painting is framed behind anti-reflective glass, which means that the colors are beautifully preserved. The frame is subtly carved in Art Deco style. A similar painting by the same painter is depicted in an old exhibition book by this painter. See picture. His work work has also been purchased by various museums.
The book about Gaston Geleyn is beautifully illustrated, 170 pages and it is about the life and work of the artist. The book was published in 1933. Book is supplied with the painting.

GELEYN, Gaston (Brussels, 1892 - Grimbergen 1949).
Painter. Stayed with a great uncle in Paris until he was 16 years old. After a short stay in Brussels, he returned to Paris and attended classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts led by Roll and Flaming. After the First World War he traveled the world and stayed in America, India and North Africa, among other places. He was under contract from 1919 to 1929 by a Dutch art dealer. His first exhibition was at the 'Giroux' Gallery in Brussels in 1933. Geleyn painted landscapes, marines, figure still lifes and flowers. He also painted the portrait of King Albert I. "A child prodigy in painting, Tanomura Chokunyu originally modeled himself after the style of the famous Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835), who had adopted him at the age of eight. After Chikuden's death, Chokunyu took up an intense study of imported Chinese paintings." Paul Berry in: Literati Modern, p.136.) - The certificate box was inscribed by Tajika Chikuson (1864-1922), one of Chokunyu's key disciples.
Around 1840, he studied Confucianism under Kotake Shinozaki in Osaka, deepened his friendships with Heihachiro Oshio and Tessai Tomioka through sencha, and began to be recognized as a painter.
Furthermore, in 1862, he founded and hosted the Seiwan Tea Ceremony (a sencha tea ceremony), which achieved great fame.
In 1868, he moved to Kyoto and participated in the establishment of the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School (opened in 1880), serving as its principal and making efforts to foster the next generation.Furthermore, in 1996, he established the Japan Nanga Association with Tessai and others, and established the Japan Nanga Association, which was established in modern Japan. Kano Osanobu (狩野養信)
Osanobu Kano (born August 18, 1796; died June 12, 1846) was the ninth painter of the Kobikicho Kano School in the Edo period. His common name was Shozaburo. His father was Naganobu KANO, and Tadanobu KANO was his son. His Go (pen name) was Osanobu Seisenin, Kaishinsai, and Gyokusen.
Brief Personal History
He was born the eldest son of Naganobu ISENIN during the Edo period. He was first sent to serve at Edo Castle at the age of 15, and it appears that he was apparently pushed by his father to perform various public tasks for the Kanon School. He kept a diary for 36 years, starting from the day before he first went into service at Edo Castle until the day before he died. The diary is entitles "Official Service Diary" (it consists of 52 volumes that are maintained at the Tokyo National Museum, and 4 volumes that are separately maintained at the different families), and have become the focus of a lot of attention in recent years for the detailed information they present on the daily life and work of a prestigious official painter. The reading of the characters of his name was originally "Takenobu"; however, with the birth of the first son of the Shongun Ieyoshi TOKUGAWA in 1813, whose name was Takechiyo, having a sylable with the same pronunciation of "Take"was deemed to be inappropriate, and was therefore changed to "Osanobu". Because Takenobu died the following year, after which he was referred to as Gyokujuin, Osanobu changed his pen name Gyokusen he had used until that point to Seisenin, in order to avoid using the same Chinese charcter pronounced alike. In 1819, he attained the second highest rank for a Buddhist priest, Hogen, and assumed the role of head of the family after his father passed away in 1828. In 1834 he attained the highest rank for a Buddhist priest, Hoin. He oversaw the rennovation of the wall paintings of Nishinomaru Palace of Edo Castle from 1838 to 1839, and Honmaru Palace of it from 1844 to 1846. Yoshinobu Kano
(1747-1797) A Kano school painter who was active in the early Edo period.
Kano Yoshinobu was one of the top Kano School painters of his day. He was the son of Kano Gensen and was a student of Kano Toshu, the fourth- generation head of the Surugadai atelier. Training of Kano School painters was very strict and required long days of practice. He did quite well by himself to be ordained the rank of "Hogen" in 1785 at the age of 37 or 38 and must have been able to please the court nobles with his pieces. He was, as most high- ranking Kanō School painters were, a patronage painter. Paintings are hold by the Tokio National Museum, British Museum and Boston FIne art Museum.
