DE ES (DE ES Schwertberger) - Popular Viennese Fantastic Realist artist was born in 1942 in Gresten, Lower Austria, as Dieter Schwertberger. He studied the painting technique of the Old Masters in Vienna under Ernst Fuchs and has been an independent artist since 1962. DE ES lived three years in Switzerland and twelve years in New York City. The painter has been known under the name DE ES since 1972. He currently lives in Vienna.
The artist considers himself to be a seeker, who shows what he has found through “the language of the images”. His message of “meaning and transformation” finds clear and intense expression in his paintings through a precise use of space, light and texture.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist who has professionally shown my work in dozens of galleries and museums since the late 1990s. But while my work can take many different forms, my practice is rooted in drawing. Whether I am working on the watercolor and acrylic pieces, or fiber-based pieces, every project and every idea begins with a drawing. Through that process I lay out my ideas, ask myself questions, experiment with different options, and try to resolve all the formal and conceptual issues I will attempt in my final piece.
The themes I have explored in my work from 1999 on, and even before then, have remained the same even though my style has shifted radically. I have been interested in exploring self-portraiture, personal narratives, femininity, politics, and the use of text in art. I have remained constant in my exploration of critical theory and art history, and drawn influence from artists as diverse as Joseph Beuys, Henry Darger, and Adrian Piper.

Historic Note on Bank Street Atelier -
Bank Street Atelier was founded in 1969 by George J. Goodstadt (Fine Arts Publisher) along with Jacques Mourlot, third generation of the famous Mourlot print shop in Paris, France. Bank Street Atelier became one of the premier lithography print studios in NYC at that time and became a major graphic center, which attracted many of the Modern American Masters of the 1970’s, including Alexander Calder, Willem deKooning, Red Grooms, Al Hirschfeld, Ellsworth Kelly, Romare Bearden, Fairfield Porter, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Alex Katz and many more.
