Coffee + Cigarettes, Lithograph on Newsprint Grey Somerset Signed Edition of 10
Located in New York, NY
This is a super rare and imaginative print - LAST ONE - from the edition of only 10  (TEN) - and it makes an amazing gift!  Paul Leibow Coffee + Cigarettes, 2019 Lithograph on Newsprint Grey Somerset Velvet Printed at Tamarind Institute. Hand printed by Elena Carrasco under the supervision of Master Printer Brandon Gunn Pencil signed and numbered lower right from the edition of only 10 Bears Tamarind Institute chop mark lower left Accompanied by copy of detailed Tamarind documentation sheet Measurements: 28.25" (vertical) x 22" (horizontal) Unframed Critic Tris Mccall writes in a recent review: "Felix the Cat is older than Mickey. He was created over a century ago, and he's been fading in plain view ever since sound was added to motion pictures. But in his Gilded Age prime, Felix was incredibly popular: famous enough to leave a burn mark in his image on the collective imagination. The spirit of the Cat retains enough psychic power to guide the hand of at least one contemporary artist - painter and sculptor Paul Leibow... This playful, irreverent work uses the figure of Felix, or what's left of him, to comment on sexuality, decay and reassembly, mechanical reproduction and corporate branding, and the ubiquity and ambiguity of the commercialized image..." Lithograph with image concept invention of a non existent character: Feel licks ears over ads of vintage comics, creating a unique abstract work, including ghosted figures and cigarettes and coffee falling from an imagined earthquake. The attempt was to use a series from vintage characters that inform the piece, with a body inside the Feel Licks cat face structure. Includes a brain W-ray with lamb faces as a surreal interplay. 6-color print, derived from the artist Mark Rothko in a blend roll or orange and red hue. Limited edition print, signed recto from the edition of only 10 PAUL LEIBOW BIOGRAPHY Paul Leibow works in painting, sculpture, mixed media, and film. A documentary art video about his archival process was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Arts (a program for art on film). Over his art career, his work has been selected for art books and exhibitions by curators from the Whitney Museum and Met. Leibow has created artworks for recording artist Bruce Springsteen for his world tour, including books, and branded icons/logos utilized for his concerts. 2019 awarded an art residency at Tamarind Institute New Mexico, with two editions archived in the New Mexico Art Museum (UNM). 2020 artworks featured in ArtMaze Magazine’s Winter Issue 16. Rabbis
By Mane Katz
Located in New York, NY
MANE-KATZ RABBIS, c. 1935 Oil on canvas 18 H. x 14 W. 1/2 in. (45.5 x 35.8 cm.) Signed PROVENANCE Dominion Gallery, Montreal Christies, New York, November 04, 1982. Lot 177: $11,000 Private Collection, New Jersey, 1982-2021 Estate of the above, 2021. Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mane-Katz was born in the Ukraine and became an early 20th-century artist, known especially for portraits and paintings with Jewish themes. From childhood, he had been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which was reflected in his paintings. He had a peripatetic life between Russia, France, Israel, and America. He first studied art in Kiev at the Beaux Arts Academy, and in 1913, went to Paris where he associated with Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall and continued his art studies there at the Beaux Arts Academy. During World War I, he tried to join the Foreign Legion but was rejected because he was too short. He went back in Russia again, this time joining the Soviet Revolution but rejected the cause because he was so horrified by Josef Stalin. He worked briefly for the Russian ballets, and in 1921, he returned to Paris where in 1927 he took French citizenship. For the next twelve years, he traveled widely, showing his art work and doing many paintings. In 1939, as World War II was breaking out, he was drafted by the French and then was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and went to the United States and remained there until 1945, exhibiting his paintings at Katia Granoff Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery. After the war, he returned to Paris where he had exhibited in the Salons. In Paris to the end of his career, he worked happily, painting hundreds of portraits of rabbis...

Neil Welliver at O'Farrel Gallery, 1988 offset lithograph poster landscape
By Neil Welliver
Located in New York, NY
Neil Welliver at O'Farrel Gallery poster, 1998 Offset lithograph 24 × 18 inches Unframed This offset lithograph poster was published on the occasion of Neil Welliver's exhibition at O'Farrell Gallery from July 17 to September 5, 1998. The depicted painting on the poster is Neil Welliver, Marsh Shadow, 1986. Publisher O'Farrell Gallery, Brunswick, Maine Accompanied by Certificate of Guarantee issued by Alpha 137 Gallery About Neil Welliver: Neil Welliver (American, 1929-2005) is best known for his large-scale, vivid paintings and woodcuts of the remote Maine wilderness. Born in the small town of Millville, Pennsylvania, he first studied at the Philadelphia College of Art (1953), followed by Yale (1955), where Josef Albers and Burgoyne Diller were among his teachers. Their influence, as well as the rising popularity of Abstract Expressionism, is evident from Welliver’s early experimentations in abstraction, which include elements of color field painting, as well as the color theory of Albers, and the flattened, “allover” space of Pollock and de Kooning. Welliver would go on to teach at Yale from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, by which time he had moved formally towards the representational, beginning to paint the landscape of Maine. In the late 1960s and early 70s he also produced scenes of nude bathers in streams, their bodies abstracted by the moving water. While continuing to work as the chair of the University of Pennsylvania graduate school (1966-1989), he moved permanently to Lincolnville, Maine, in 1970. Welliver lost his studio, home, and much of his work to a fire in 1975. The following year, his second wife and infant daughter died. Further tragedy came with the death of his college aged son in 1991. His artistic practice remained the mode through which he survived these hardships. By the 1980s he was painting landscapes almost exclusively. The resulting body of work nods to many of Welliver’s early influences, as he utilizes natural repetitions and distortions to represent the innate abstraction of the natural world. These mature works are based on long plein-air studies, where Welliver would carry a 70-pound pack of painting supplies into remote landscapes, and sit for three hours at a time. He continued to paint the landscape surrounding his large property in Maine until his death in 2005. Welliver was a member of the National Academy of Design, and received notable awards from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. - Courtesy of Alexandre Gallery
