Oil on canvas

Born in Boston, William Norton became a noted marine painter, stirred by his youth when he sailed on family-owned ships. He studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston, and with George Inness, and then established a studio in Boston.
In the early 1870s, he went to Paris and became a student with Chevreuse and A. Vollon, and then he settled in London where he exhibited throughout the last quarter of the 19th century. His reputation there was based on his scenes of the Thames River, and ocean and coastal views.
In 1901, he and his wife returned to the United States and settled in New York City. He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, where a treacherous ledge on the southern side of the island is named "Norton's Ledge" for him.
He was a member of the Boston Art Club with whom he exhibited from 1873 to 1909. He also exhibited with the Pennsylvania Academy, the Royal Academy in London, the Paris Salon, the 1893 Chicago Exposition...

Huge Antique American Modernist Abstract "Cursive Landscape" Framed Oil Painting
Located in Buffalo, NY
Impressive early American modernist abstract oil painting by Alton S. Tobey (1914 - 2005). Framed. Oil on board. Signed. Impressive modernist painting by an important and historical artist.
The following is written and submitted by Joseph Dolice, Exhibition Director of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts. This information accompanied the exhibition, "Alton Tobey," of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts October 22 to November 14, 2003.
Millions of Americans have seen reproductions of the art of Alton Tobey, one of the most famous of today's living illustrators -- in national magazines such as Life, Reader's Digest and American Artist; and in public murals such as at The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City; and in Westchester where his Roots of Westchester mural is installed at the White Plains County Courthouse. Few people, however, had had the opportunity to see almost three dozen of his original paintings, including many of his portraits of famous people, at any single time or place before in history.
From October 22nd through November 14th, 2003 The New Rochelle Council on The Arts, a major cultural resource for the citizens of New Rochelle and the residents of the surrounding Westchester community will present a special one-man exhibition of thirty-three of Alton Tobey's original paintings, many of which have never been publicly shown before. The show will be held in the 3000 square foot Lumen Winter Gallery in the lobby of The New Rochelle Library, the site of many major exhibitions in the past by the NRCA, such as its show of original artwork of Norman Rockwell and of Frederic Remington. Both of these artists also achieved fame mainly as illustrative painters, and had ties to the community.
Alton Tobey was born in Middletown, Connecticut and received his BFA and MFA at the Yale School of Fine Arts and later taught there for four years. He has also taught at the City College of New York and has been juror for many prestigious art competitions. His work is in over 30 museums and in important government, corporate and private art collections. He has had over 50 one-man exhibitions. His work has been published in over a dozen national magazines and books, and he has over three dozen historic murals to his credit.

"Landscape Scene of Mexican Villagers" Expressionistic Oil Painting on Masonite
By Michael Baxte
Located in New York, NY
A strong modernist oil painting depicted in 1971 by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his landscape paintings, with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. This piece is from later in his career, but we can feel this underlying style throughout.
Art measures 18 x 21.75 inches
Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City.
Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. Since for the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient light of science.”
By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett, were the winners.
In his 1924 naturalization application, he indicated that he was sometimes known as “Michael Posner Baxte.” One of the witnesses to his application was Bernard Karfiol, a Jewish American artist. That’s when Michael may...

"Warrington Circus PA" Bucks County Pastoral Landscape Oil Painting on Board
Located in New York, NY
Post-Impressionist summer pastoral scene of a circus with tent, balloons, figures and Elephant in Warrington, PA. Willet has portrayed this piece in a most intimate, yet energetic way, and has packed much feeling into this miniature work. It is almost as if we are there in the afternoon, bringing a beautiful feeling of nostalgia. Christopher is known for capturing the beauty and simplicity of an earlier time of the 20th Century; old New York, families working together, villages and farms, and friends taking walks together. Many are depicted in recognizable historical settings and this piece is an excellent example of this as he captures a historic setting of Bucks County with the charm of an eventful afternoon. Christopher engages his audience with the quick use of brushwork and great attention to picking up the energy passionately of his subjects. This piece is signed lower right and it comes housed in a silver tone wood frame ready to be displayed with hanging hardware on verso.
