About the Item

Elias Telles (b. 1950, American) Monterey, California, 2019 Acrylic on Canvas, Found Wood, Metal Brackets 21.5 x 25.5 Inches Elias led an adventurous existence before becoming a self-taught painter. Born into a family of 14 siblings in East Los Angeles, he joined the Marine Corps upon graduation from high school and served two years in Vietnam as a rifleman. Once home he experienced undiagnosed post- traumatic stress disorder as a result and discovered the best way to subdue his demons was by producing drawings - that he would quickly destroy. It wasn’t until he was in his late ‘40s that he started to paint. At a local flea market one of his early works caught the attention of a set designer who placed it in a Steve Martin movie and from there his reputation grew: paintings subsequently appeared in a number of other productions which created a Hollywood following and his collectors now include several film directors, work is included in the permanent collection of The House of Blues, and he was one of the featured artists on the PBS series ‘Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations.’ An ex-marine, Telles lives quietly in California without a computer or a cell phone. His tastes lean towards American history and early blues and country music, subjects that frequently appear in his paintings. Soldiers, skeletons and honky-tonk men populate his paintings as do cultural and historical figures such as early minstrel show entertainer Gus Cannon, a ghoulishly- rendered Hank Williams, and the revered Alabama folk artist Bill Traylor, as well as numerous anonymous schoolteachers and sailors, seascapes and farm scenes. Provocative text is often included, Telles’s musings and his unique take on the world are a distinct feature of his work as are his elegant/rustic handmade wooden frames. While his brightly colored and more monochromatic scenes exude a celebratory atmosphere of Americana recalling the works of Horace Pippin and Grandma Moses, Elias Telles is a distinct personality and uniquely gifted artist who brings to his work all the charm of some earlier primitive painters combined with an unusually cerebral and provocative dimension. Having recently retired from his lifelong trade of brick laying and marble-setting, Elias is now fully able to devote himself entirely to painting. A recent acquisition of his ‘Bean Eaters’ painting by the very established 19th century Algonquin Club in Boston has led to a commission of several additional paintings of historic Boston athletes for that institution when it re-opens in 2020 after renovations.

  • "Ribbon" Extra-Large Contemporary Landscape Painting By American Martin Hoffman
    By Martin Hoffman
    Located in Frederiksberg C, DK
Introducing "Ribbon," an extraordinary painting from the "Jersey Meadow Series" by Martin Hoffman in the 1970s. From the 1970s onwards, Hoffman's career showcased a masterful combination of beautiful painting techniques and challenging subject matter. This contemporary painting depicts an abandoned landscape with a hypnotic blue plastic ribbon at its center. Hoffman's landscape creates an almost mesmerizing effect, where the subject matter of destruction and decay is presented poetically. The warm shades of grey with hints of blue, brown, and purple create a limited yet powerful palette that enhances the melancholic beauty of the painting. The painting measures 151cm x 202cm / 59.5in x 79.5in and is signed 'Martin Hoffman' on the reverse side of the canvas. It is titled 'Ribbon' and is dated '73.' Additionally, the artist specifies that the painting is part of the 'Jersey Meadow Series.' It is ready to hang and comes with a silver-painted frame. The condition of the painting is great, with hardly any signs of wear. The frame has a few scratches but is otherwise in good condition. Artist Bio: Martin Hoffman was a versatile artist and illustrator, mostly known for his paintings. He was a self-taught painter and a gifted drummer who had worked as an art director for the Miami News, Graphic Arts Inc., and Steiner & Wall Advertising. In 1973, Martin Hoffman landed his first solo exhibition at the OK Harris...

  • Contemporary Brown Pale Light Forrest Landscape By Danish Steffen Bue
    By Steffen Bue
    Located in Frederiksberg C, DK
“Folehaven” is a beautiful forest scenery by the Scandinavian (Danish) contemporary artist Steffen Bue. In this work, the artist draws his inspiration from the pale light of spring. He gradually brings out the nuances and intensity of delicate natural light dancing in between the trees, up until the level when the light catches an intensity that becomes sharp to the eye. The color palette is limited as he works with deeper nuances to capture the harmony created between the warm and cold colors that are characteristic of a forest in spring. Acrylic on canvas with dimensions 70cm (H) x 99cm (W) (27,5in. x 38,9in.). This work is monogrammed “S...
