Painting. Gouache on board. Signed Bela Kadar (Hungary, 1877-1955) Bela Kadar was born in Hungary in 1877. Amongst his early interests was mural painting. Like many of the artists of his day he was drawn to Paris and Berlin, and by 1910 he had visited both cities twice. In 1923, Kadar showed his paintings in Berlin at the invitation of Herwath Walden. Walden was an important figure in the German avant-garde, being the publisher of the journal Der Sturm which featured the works of Franz Marc, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall and Oskar Kokoschka. During the group exhibition at Walden's gallery with other artists of Der Sturm, Kadar met Katherine Dreier whose Societe Anonyme was instrumental in bringing the work of the European avant-garde to New York. With her help two major exhibitions of his work were planned for the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the second of whom in September, 1928 Kadar travelled from Europe to attend. Pair of English Victorian gilt framed oil paintings of white horse with saddle by wall (signed J. PAUL 1873).  

Oil on panel by acclaimed outsider artist, Bruno Del Favero (b. Italy 1910, d. USA 1995), circa 1970. Fine example showcasing Del Favero's aptitude for creating fantastical landscapes. Contrasting oxen / bulls and flamingos with a castle backdrop creates an imaginary context removed from reality. Del Favero's marriage of fantasy and whimsy beautifully suits his Naïve painting style. Singed on verso. Bio from the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Born Princeton, Michigan, 1910; died Greenwich, Connecticut, 1995 Bruno Del Favero moved from Michigan to northern Italy with his parents at age five, returning in 1928 and settling in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he married and remained for the rest of his days. He made his living as a mason, chauffeur, and landscape gardener. It is not known exactly when or why he began to paint his delicate and mysterious landscapes, but he was exhibiting in local art shows by the early 1970s and took himself seriously enough as an artist to join the Greenwich Art Society. He maintained a studio in the basement of his home, but never shared his art with his wife and five children. Greek artist Konstantin Kakanias is something of a cult figure in the fashion and art worlds. Born in Athens and now based in Los Angeles, Kakanias has been a fixture on the international art and design scene for more than three decades. His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries across the globe. He has also designed fabrics for Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, and other titans of fashion. Charles Stuart (British 1838-1907) "Their Mountain Home" from 1895-1897 is on oil on canvas and is signed as well as dated. This gorgeous highland landscape depicts a stag herd retreating down the mountain from the impending mists. Stuart captures the swirling movement and material quality of the fog, which obscures the towering mountains adding an element of mystery and magic to the painting. In juxtaposition, the foreground of the painting is rendered in precise detail from the rippling tides to the leaves of grass. Each stag is differentiated adding an element of naturalism. Charles Stuart, F. S. A. was a landscape painter active from 1881 to 1904. Born to a long line of painters, Stuart exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the prestigious Savage Club whose members included Charles Dickens. He was married to Jane Maria Bowkett...
