Brown Fine Art, Locust Valley, New York The Impressionist Frank Myers Boggs spent his formative and mature years abroad and in 1923 became a naturalized French citizen. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, but moved as a young boy to New York, where his father was a newspaper executive. The artist began his career at the age of seventeen as a wood engraver for Harper’s, preparing illustrations for Harper’s Weekly and for an American edition of the works of Charles Dickens. It has also been stated that he studied with the portraitist John Barnard Whittaker (1836–1926). After working at Niblo’s Garden in New York with a scene painter named Vauglin, Boggs went to Paris to study scene painting. On his arrival there in 1876, he was unable to find anyone to instruct him in this field and instead entered the École des Beaux-Arts. NICOLAS DE STAEL (1914-1955) was a French painter of Russian origin known for his use of a thick impasto and his highly abstract landscape painting. He also worked with collage, illustration and textiles. Known for his abstract landscapes and still lifes that uniquely blend colour, form and texture, Nicolas de Staël was fascinated by the world’s many spectacles and documented them through his art. De Staël was born in 1914 into an aristocratic family in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His father served as a cavalry general under Tsar Nicholas II and the family was forced to flee after the Russian Revolution. Both Nicolas’s parents died in the early 1920s, meaning he and his siblings were raised by a foster family in Brussels where he would begin his formal art education at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. De Staël’s early work was influenced by the European avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, including Cubism and Fauvism. However, he soon developed his own distinctive style with thick impasto and a bold use of colour. His early paintings, often sombre in tone, gradually evolved into more vibrant and dynamic compositions, reflecting his growing interest in the emotional and expressive potential of colour and form. In 1938 de Staël had moved to France, where he became an integral part of the post-war Parisian art scene. Having worked initially in the atelier of Fernand Léger, de Staël’s circle of friends came to include Sonia Delaunay, Le Corbusier and Jean Arp, who encouraged his tendencies towards abstract work. His work during this period marked a significant departure from traditional representation, moving towards abstraction while maintaining a strong sense of structure and form. De Staël's paintings from this era showcase his ability to balance abstraction with figuration, using broad, gestural strokes and a vibrant palette to convey movement and energy. This contemporary equine painting, "Unbridled Fusion" by artist Gabrielle Benot is a 47x58 original mixed media painting on canvas. Depicted is three monochromatic abstract horses from a front on view. The three horses are running head on towards the viewer, accented with powerful, emotional strokes in black, white, and grey. To create a three dimensional effect the artist mixes different media into the paint and thickly applies it to the canvas to achieve the desired texture. About the artist: Born in Latvia, Ms. Gabrielle Benot had a natural gift for artistic creativity. From a young age she had a keen interest in sketching, drawing, and sculpting. She matured as an artist over time, often under the guidance of her grandfather, who was a self-taught painter. Eventually she would study fashion design at the Royal Fashion Academy (Margrethe Skolen) in Copenhagen. Several of her teachers include Andrea Rushing, known for his Steampunk aesthetic, and Jeffrey Watts. Aside from her teachers, Gabrielle has also been influenced and inspired by Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, Pino Daeni, Nikolai Fechin, Gustav Klimt, Joan Mitchell, Joan Brown , Jean Paul Riopelle to name a few. Her style reflects an interest in partial figurative representation and a reduction of subject matter into minimalistic elements. Additionally, many of Ms. Benot’s paintings materialize from, and are inspired by a variety of sources; some of these include literature, magazines, and alluring private snapshots based on luxury fashion branding and the equestrian lifestyle. She has used many of these sources to develop a technique of her own that include the use of wet brushes, dry brushes, palette knives, oil pastels, charcoal and whatever else can come to mind as a medium, tool or a collage detail. Concentrating on form, color, and a sense of stylistic freedom, Gabrielle uses light and shadow in her images to approach a semi-abstract impressionistic graphic design that has been described as “unsettling,” “accusatory,” “exotic,” and “tastefully erotic.” Gabrielle uses her technique to experiment with abstract forms and non figurative art...
