Blue Circle on Fuchsia
By Ruth Adler
Located in New York, NY
ABOUT THIS PIECE: Color is the foundation of this Canadian artist's work. Her circles start as a mood or idea that eventually evolve into a colored circle. She is curious how different colors interact when they're placed next to each other. Within a digital medium she experiments with intensity of colors and the different sensations colors evoke. Why a circle? When she explores her fascination with this shape, she discovers that the circle represents all that is familiar and comforting. It is the shape of the rising sun, of a mother's nipple, of the iris of the eye, and of a full moon. ABOUT THIS ARTIST: Ruth Adler is a Canadian artist whose mediums include paintings, works on paper, animated films and textiles. She is inspired by the city of Tel Aviv, music (she plays the harmonica) and her personal memories. Jim Kempner Fine Art...

Thin-lipped Armourer I: W. H. Auden poetry with Henry Moore, Yorkshire landscape
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
This darkly-shaded portrait of two figures is one of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist for the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered lower left in pencil. Printed in inky black, Thin-lipped Armourer features two figures subsumed in crosshatched shadow. The figure on the left can barely be seen, and the hollows of his eyes recall a skull. Numerous Moore prints from this series include two heads, perhaps relating to the first lines of Auden’s poem Lullaby. Lullaby was the first poem Moore read for this project, which begins: “Lay your sleeping head, my love / Human on my faithless arm; / Time and fevers burn away Individual beauty from / Thoughtful children, and the grave / Proves the child ephemeral: / But in my arms till break of day / Let the living creature lie, / Mortal, guilty, but to me / The entirely beautiful.” This print evinces Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding. The Auden/Moore limited edition book and portfolio were exhibited on publication at the British Museum, London, with an accompanying catalogue. Thin-lipped Armourer I is one of a group of lithographs...

American Dance Festival 1978
By Jennifer Bartlett
Located in New York, NY
Jennifer Losch Bartlett American Dance Festival 1978, 1978 Lithograph on wove paper Pencil signed and numbered 163/150 31 × 23 inches Unframed This limited edition print was designed by Jennifer Bartlett for the American Dance Festival in 1978. It is ; this is the hand signed and numbered limited edition lithograph - not to be confused with the separate poster edition which was not on the same lithographic paper. About Jennifer Bartlett: Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941, d. 2022) was known for her room-sized installations ranging in medium, that explored her immediate environments including houses, mountains, trees, gardens, and the ocean. Inspired by Minimalism, she started working on square steel enameled plates in 1968 on which she went on to create her most notable works. Rhapsody (1975–1976), a polyptych first installed at Paula Cooper Gallery filling the entirety of the gallery, included hundreds of these painted steel plates. That work is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her work moved from Abstract Expressionism to Minimalism to Conceptualism with some works touching on all at once. Working in two dimensions and occasionally moving to three, her works often started in a controlled, mathematical abstraction and moved to more painterly realism. Bartlett’s first survey exhibition was held in 1985 and traveled to the Walker Art Center, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute. In 2006, her early enameled steel plate paintings were surveyed at the Addison Gallery of American Art. Klaus Ottman curated her second traveling survey exhibition in 2013–14, Jennifer Bartlett: History of the Universe—Works 1970–2011, which traveled to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Parrish Art Museum. In 2014, the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibited all three of her monumental plate...

Kimber Smith (Hand signed and inscribed) hand signed and inscribed rare print
By Kimber Smith
Located in New York, NY
Kimber Smith (Hand signed and inscribed), ca. 1974 Offset Lithograph Poster. Hand Signed. Inscribed. Hand signed and inscribed on lower recto (front). Inscription reads: "Greetings to Alan from Kimber" 22 3/8 × 14 7/8 inches Unframed Kimber Smith is a leading American Abstract Expressionist artist who gained early fame in Europe where he befriended Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis when he moved to Paris. He later returned to the US, settling on Southampton. This print is from a Swiss exhibition in the mid 1970s at Galerie Ziegler in Zurich, which, by the way, still sells Smith's works. Kimber Smith signed in pencil and inscribed to his friend and Hampton's neighbor Dr. Alan York. It is extremely rare to find a print like this with an authentic signature and warm inscription by Kimber Smith, with such fine provenance - which makes this such a collectible piece. Optometrist Dr. Alan York of East Hampton a renowned art collector who befriended many of the artists in the area. In a tribute to Dr. York, the East Hampton star writes, "He counted among his patients the artist Willem de Kooning, with whom he spent hours discussing the old masters while watching him paint. Understanding how de Kooning painted helped him make glasses suitable for both his close-up and faraway work..." We don't know if York made Kimber Smith's glasses -- but we do know that he knew him personally, hence the warm inscription. The inscription on the print reads: "Greetings to Alan from Kimber" About Kimber Smith: Kimber Smith (USA; born 1922 Boston, MA; died 1981...

Downtown, The El
By John Marin
Located in New York, NY
John Marin (1870-1953), Downtown, The El, etching, 1921, signed in pencil lower left (also signed and dated in the plate). Reference: Zigrosser 134, only state. Published initially by Alfred Stieglitz and then included as part of the Folio of American Etchings by the magazine The New Republic in 1924, in an edition of unknown size but probably above 500. In very good condition, the full sheet, on Van Gelder wove paper, 6 3/4 x 8 3/4, the sheet 11 x 13 3/4 inches. Provenance: Hirschl and Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, New York. A fine bright impression. Initially the New Republic Set, sometimes known as Six American Etchings, contained Marin’s Brooklyn Bridge No. 6 (Swaying) (Zigrosser 112). But after a small number of sets were completed, Downtown the El was substituted for Zigrosser 112 (and so the number of Downtown The Els in the set would have been a bit fewer than the others in the set). Zigrosser, who apparently had not seen a complete set at the time he created the catalogue raisonne, conjectured that the substitution might have been because the original plate was damaged. But since the printer, Peter Platt, was the most renowned artist’s printer of his time, and worked alone, it is unlikely that he would have damaged the plate; a more likely possibility is that he switched to a print that was more comparable in size to the others in the set (The Brooklyn Bridge print...

By Jennifer Bartlett
Located in New York, NY
Jennifer Losch Bartlett Rhapsody (hand signed and inscribed), 1985 Hardback monograph with dust jacket (hand signed and inscribed to Nadine) Hand signed and inscribed in black marker "for Nadine" by Jennifer Bartlett on the half title page 12 × 12 × 1 inches Provenance signed for the present owner at Paula Cooper Gallery on January 21, 2016 This substantial, lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket, was hand signed by Jennifer Bartlett for the present owner at Paula Cooper Gallery on January 21, 2016. Makes an excellent gift Book information: Publisher‏: ‎ Harry N Abrams (November 1, 1985) English; Hardcover; 108 pages with color illustrations Editorial Review: Rhapsody'' is Bartlett's multi-part, multi-theme epic, a statement of the coming of age of an artist. A portable mural extended over 987 one-foot steel plates requiring 153 running feet of wall space, it is an enormous and infrequently mastered challenge to install and exhibit. In 1985-86, however, it will be on view in Minneapolis, Kansas City, Brooklyn, La Jolla, and Pittsburgh, and well worth a trip. In book form it becomes more available, with Smith's guided tour through sections, with Bartlett's notes giving conceptual coherence, and the opportunity to move from close-up to long view by turning a page. Rhapsody'' and this book afford a glimpse of a mind and art in action, a discovering and ordering process, an exciting demonstration of ways of growing and expressing the self and the world. Highly recommended. About Jennifer Bartlett: By the mid-1970s, Jennifer Bartlett (1941-2022, b. Long Beach, California) had emerged as a leading American artist of her time—particularly following the landmark presentation at Paula Cooper Gallery of Rhapsody (1976), Bartlett’s magnum opus, now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Bartlett’s first survey exhibition was held in 1985 at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveled to the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Philadelphia, among others. In 2006, the Addison Gallery of American Art surveyed Bartlett’s early enameled steel plate paintings in the period from 1968–76. In 2013-14, Klaus Ottmann curated her second traveling survey, which visited the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Parrish Art Museum, New York. In 2014, the Cleveland Museum of Art united her three monumental plate...
