Thinking Aloud in the Museum of Modern Art, Hodgkin, abstract black and white
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Large scale black and white abstract interior scene with dots, lines, brushstrokes, paint daubs, fingerprints, squares and rectangles, and hand painting in grey. Hang in contemporary, modern and minimalist spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract. Paper: 30 x 40 in. / 76.2 x 101.5 cm. Thinking Aloud in the Museum of Modern Art by Howard Hodgkin. Soft-ground etching on yellowish grey Hodgkinson hand made paper. Signed by the artist, dated 70, and numbered 21/100 lower center in red crayon. Printed from the same plates as 'All Alone in the Museum of Modern Art'. While All Alone features dark pools of hand coloring, the lighter image field of Thinking Aloud reveals how Hodgkin used his entire hand to create lines and textures. This print depicts an abstracted scene, perhaps a window and a door, in Hodgkin's signature painterly style. The expressive brush marks and fingerprints in this print are an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Thinking Aloud in the Museum of Modern Art at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s. Part of a series of four prints reflecting on a visit to the Museum...

Abstract mixed media lithograph and relief by Spanish artist, Picasso friend S/N
By Antoni Clavé
Located in New York, NY
Antoni Clavé Untitled, from the Album International 2 Portfolio, 1977 Mixed media: Lithograph in relief 29 1/4 × 19 3/4 inches Edition 1/50 Signed and number on front Unframed This is a rare lithograph by the world renowned Catalan graphic artist, painter and sculptor, signed and numbered in pencil from the limited edition of only 50. Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Album International Portfolio, number 1 of 50. Text from the Colophon page reads as follows: Born in Barcelona, living in St. Tropez, France. Lithograph in relief, edition of 50, each numbered and signed by the artist. Antoni Clavé biography Antoni Clavé was born in Barcelona on April 5th, 1913. From 1926 he attended evening courses at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios "Llotja", a school both Picasso and Miró attended in their youth. In 1927, one of Clavé's teachers found him a position as a house painter's apprentice because of his growing fascination with the hands-on nature of painting and especially with the materials used for such work, like learning how to prepare paints. In 1932, Clavé stopped attending evening classes and, on the recommendation of Illescas, an architect, was employed at the firm of Cinaes, where he designed the weekly cinema posters. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he served as a draughtsman for the Republican government but eventually was forced to flee to France. After a brief internment at Les Haras camp in Perpignan, Clavé settled in Paris in 1939 without any papers, drawing comics and working as an illustrator to get by. In the 1940s Clavé's work showed the stylistic influence of Bonnard and Vuillard, until he met fellow Spanish expatriate Pablo Picasso in 1944. This meeting marked a pivotal change in Clavé's style, and he was forever grateful to be considered a lifelong friend of Don Pablo, as he called him. From 1946, Clavé created numerous designs for the ballet and theatre in Paris, Munich, London and New York and in the 1950s, he turned to book illustration. He was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design) for his work on the 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen. In 1954, Clavé ceased working as a stage-set designer and illustrator to devote himself entirely to painting, visiting Spain again. His paintings became more abstract and enigmatic; inspired by wall...

International Meeting Plaza, Signed/N 25-color silkscreen, beloved female artist
By Thelma Appel
Located in New York, NY
Thelma Appel Meeting Plaza, 2018 25 Color Silkscreen on 320 Gram Coventry paper with full margins and deckled edges. Accompanied by ARTIST SIGNED, gallery issued Certificate of Authenticity (COA) - hand signed by BOTH the artist and gallery director 23.5" (vertical) x 29.25" (horizontal) Hand signed, titled, annotated & dated on the lower right front - a rare Artists Proof, aside from the limited edition of 75 Unframed This magnificent silkscreen, Meeting Plaza is signed, dated and numbered in graphite pencil on the front from the limited edition of 75. Other examples of this work were exhibited in the 2021 show "New York and No Place Else: Art that Celebrates New York" at the Chashama Foundation, New York, and it was also featured in the invitational exhibition "Women on Paper" in April, 2021 at the Sager Reeves Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. "Meeting Plaza" is a place where people from all over the world are always welcome to meet in peace and enjoyment; an exquisite 25-color limited edition silkscreen done in collaboration with master printer Gary Lichtenstein. The work is evocative of New York's Rockefeller Center and the United Nations, but the flags are abstracted, to emphasize international unity, rather than single out any individual country. The artist explained: "I wanted to convey a city that welcomed all nationalities and all people… The flags for me are a counterpoint to the city’s geometric architecture, and their suggested movement and irregular shapes echo the organic morphology of the people below. I painted an evening sky. It is dusk. Nobody is rushing. People are conversing with each other, walking slowly or gathering in small groups enjoying a calm evening in the New York City…I, too, am one of the people converging at the 'Meeting Plaza' ...” Other examples of "Meeting Plaza" were exhibited in the 2021 show "New York and No Place Else: Art that Celebrates New York" at the Chashama Foundation, New York, and the print was featured in the invitational exhibition "Women on Paper" in April, 2021 at the Sager Reeves Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. Thelma Appel biography A co-founder of the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, Thelma Appel is a representational and abstract painter who has been working and teaching for more than six decades. Most recently, she was subject of a 50-year career survey (October, 2019 -February 2020) at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont, entitled Thelma Appel: Abstract/Observed curated by Mara Williams, and she exhibited at the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut which acquired one of her fabric collages for their permanent collection. Thelma Appel was raised in Darjeeling, India and educated in London, England, at St. Martin's School of Art (now Central St. Martins) and Hornsey College of Art before emigrating to the United States in the 1960s. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues, including the Bennington Museum, the Berkshire Museum in North Adams, Mass., the Children's Museum of the Arts in New York City, the Mattatuck Museum, the Brattleboro Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts Gallery. In 1974 she was awarded a YADDO Fellowship, and in 1975, Thelma Appel, along with the painter Carol Haerer, co-founded the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, where many distinguished painters of the day, both abstract and representational, conducted master classes. Among them were Neil Welliver, John Button, Alice Neel, Larry Poons, Friedel Dzubas, Stanley Boxer, Elizabeth Murray and Doug Ohlson – a program that continued until 1980. She has also taught drawing at Parsons School of Design, painting at Southern Vermont College and at the University of Connecticut. Appel’s work has been presented at Art on Paper, Texas Contemporary, Market Art & Design and Art New York art fairs and has been exhibited at Alpha 137...
