Giselle Borrás is a Colombian born artist who has lived and worked in Colombia, Spain and the United States of America. She has had several group and solo shows, and her work can be found in private collections across the United States and Colombia. She studied painting, drawing and color theory with several artists in Colombia and then continued her development in Madrid, Spain at The Fuencarral Studio. For the past twelve years she has been committed to her artistic work drawing inspiration from her continuous admiration for the human body.
The end results of her work are these subtle and weightless figures, created from maintaining the painting process spontaneous, filled with innocence and yet providing the viewer much force, energy and presence. Her colors remain consistent, always vibrant and bold, and the painting is finished when the idea has become a complete discussion. Art is a language spoken with fluency by this up and coming artist...

The twins Jan and Joël Martel, born March 5, 1896 in Nantes and died respectively on March 16 and September 25, 1966 in Bois-de-Céné, were both of them French sculptors and decorators. As Parisian artists, they spent long moments in Vendée region, in their Mollin property, or in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, city in which one can see their last monumental work: "The Sea Birds". A late 17th Italian carved limewood figure of Mermaid, circle of Filippo Parodi
Located in PARIS, FR
A late 17th c. Italian carved figure of Mermaid,
Circle of Filippo Parodi (Genoa, 1630 – July 22, 1702)
Dimensions: h. 29.13 in, w. 30.31 in, p. 18.9 in (at the base)
Magnificent Italian Baroque sculpture depicting a mermaid seated on the rock.
All the virtuosity of the sculptor unfolds in this carved group. The fantastic creature is featured seated, the upper part of the body darting forward, the head looking upwards. Sophisticated hairstyle with rows of pearls intertwined in her hair, her loose locks fly in the wind and bring movement to the whole sculpture.
The wide-open eyes with hollowed-out pupils make it possible to follow the mermaid's gaze, towards the sky. The half-open mouth further magnifies this bewitching and seductive attitude.
Its long double tail ending in fins wraps on either side of a rocky mound strewn with objects evoking the underwater world: seashells and shells, branches of coral.
The ornamental richness combined with the great care taken in its execution make it a work in which the splendor of Italian Baroque art unfolds in such characteristic scenic movement.
The composition betrays a strong influence from Filippo Parodi, the leader of Genoese Baroque sculpture, and points to an artist from his circle.
Our sculpture was probably part of a decorative monumental palace.
The iconographic theme evoking the marine world finds its application in the numerous fountains and artificial grottos, designed in Italian palaces at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Giacomo Filippo Parodi (Genoa 1630 – July 22, 1702) was an Italian Baroque sculptor of the Genoese school, who introduced Bernini's aesthetic to Genoa.
In his youth fathers a first apprenticeship with a carpenter, he went to Rome where he became a pupil of Bernini.
He had the opportunity to admire in person the works and style of the French sculptor Pierre Puget...

Louis-Ernest Barrias entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1858, he abandoned painting to move towards sculpture under the direction of François Jouffroy. In 1864, he won the Prix de Rome, on the theme of "The Foundation of Marseille", and was engaged on the site of the Paris Opera house. He later produced many sculpted works, most of them in marble.
In 1881, Louis-Ernest Barrias was awarded a medal of honor of the fine arts and named knight of the Legion of Honor in 1878, then promoted officer in 1881 and commander in 1900. The artist replaced Auguste Dumont at the Institute in 1884, then succeeded Jules Cavelier as a professor at the School of Fine Arts, where, among his most notable students, there were Victor Ségoffin, Charles Despiau and Paul Landowski.
