This artwork titled " Lendas Africanas Da Bahia" from the suite, 1978, is an original colors woodcut by renown Brazilian/Argentinian artist Hector Julio Paride Barnabo Carybe, 1911-1997. It is hand signed and numbered 83/200 in pencil by the artist. The Wood block mark (image) is 23.65 x 15.75 inches, sheet size is 26.75 x 19 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. It will be shipped in a 8 inches diameter heavy duty tube. About the artist: Héctor Julio Páride Bernabó (7 February 1911 – 2 October 1997) was an Argentine-Brazilian artist, researcher, writer, historian and journalist. His nickname and artistic name, Carybé, a type of piranha, comes from his time in the scouts. He died of heart failure after the meeting of a candomblé community's lay board of directors, the Cruz Santa Opô Afonjá Society, of which he was a member. Quick Facts Born, Died ... He was an Obá de Xangô, an honorary position at Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá. Orixá Panels in the Afro-Brazilian Museum in Salvador Some of Carybé's work can be found in the Afro-Brazilian Museum in Salvador: 27 cedar panels representing different orixás or divinities of the Afro-Brazilian religion candomblé. Each panel shows a divinity with their associated implements and animal. The work was commissioned by the former Banco da Bahia S.A., now Banco BBM S.A., which originally installed them in its branch on Avenida Sete de Setembro in 1968. Murals at Miami International Airport American Airlines, Odebrecht and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department partnered to install two of Carybé's murals at Miami International Airport. They have been displayed in the American Airlines terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York since 1960. The 16.5 x 53-foot murals were accredited when Carybé won the first and the second prize in a contest of public art pieces for JFK airport. As its terminal at that airport was due for demolition, American Airlines donated the murals to Miami-Dade County, and Odebrecht invested in a project to remove, restore, transport and install the murals at Miami International Airport. The mural "Rejoicing and Festival of the Americas" portrays colorful scenes from popular festivals throughout the Americas, and "Discovery and Settlement of the West" depicts the pioneers’ journey into the American West. In particular, the woodcuts in One Hundred Years of Solitude are well-known for providing a visual image of the fictional town of Macondo, where the story takes place. The illustrations depict the colorful and winding houses, the railway bridge, and the hot and humid climate of the region, contributing to the reader's immersion in the story. Carybé's woodcuts are, therefore, an important part of Gabriel García Márquez's literary legacy, bringing a visual dimension to his stories that further enriches the reader's experience. Hans Figura (Austrian, 1898-1978) was a noted painter and etcher, who was well known for his aquatint etchings on paper or satin of European and American landscape and cityscape scenes, as well as paintings of landscape and cityscape scenes, Tyrolean Alp scenes of villages and chalets, street scenes, harbor and marine scenes. Hans Figura was born January 22, 1898, in the small town of Nagy-Kikinda near the Austro-Hungarian border, to Austrian parents. His father was a railway official and he spent his childhood in various small villages along the railway line between Vienna and Hungary. He graduated from the highschool in Vienna and also studied at the Higher Graphical Federal Education and Research Institute, a vocational school there (Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr und Versuchsanstalt) As a young man, he served as an officer in the Austrian Army during WWI from 1916-18 on the Russian and Italian fronts. After the war he attended medical school at the University of Vienna for several years beginning in 1918, and seven semesters later, he passed his first state exam, but eventually decided that he preferred the arts to medicine. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien) and by 1922 he had devoted himself to painting and etching, while also working in other artistic printing mediums, batik, illustration, bookbinding and working with leather. From 1923-28, Figura made numerous art study trips throughout Europe including; Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, England, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. His first major success came in 1924, when he won acclaim for his etchings exhibited in Italy and the United States. In 1929, he visited the United States and in 1930, he traveled back to France, Holland and also Switzerland. During this time, Figura maintained studios in both New York City and Vienna, Austria. Throughout the course of his career, he exhibited his paintings and prints in many of the large cities throughout Europe and the United States and many of his etchings and paintings were acquired by museums and galleries, including The Kulturamt, Vienna, Austria; the Landesmuseum of Lower Austria; as well as The Society of Art Lovers, Berlin and Munich. About the artist: Zamy Steynovitz was born in Liegnitz, Poland in 1951 and at a very early age he aspired to be a painter. He won first prize in an art competition for children before immigrating to Israel in 1957. Formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and the Royal Academy in London, he completed his studies and began artistic pursuits in earnest. Zamy established his place in the art world after displaying his work in one-man exhibitions around the world. His art subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition and folklore. Additionally, his work presents general themes such as Paris cafes, still lives, flowers, circuses and landscapes. In the early stages of his work, he used rich pastels and light brush strokes. When he visited South America in the early 1980’s, his work reflected his new surroundings and were further enhanced by local brightness and colorfulness. His paintings are a reflection of his Eastern-European Jewish heritage, and they are enhanced by a rich choice of warm tones and colors He became known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway, and consequently was acquainted with many Nobel prize winners, such as Anwar Sadat, Menahem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, Oscar Arias Sanchez, as well as many of the world’s greatest leaders and artists. He tragically passed away in September of 2000. The work of Zamy Steynovitz is held in numerous collections worldwide. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004; followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (2018/19). In addition, Stanley/Barker Editions published Kuhn's Bushes & Succulents in 2018. In 2021, Thames & Hudson published a career retrospective titled Works. For the past two decades, the Los-Angeles based artist's works have been shown steadily, revealing an astonishing consistency in technique, of subject and of purpose. In 2001, Kuhn’s photographs were first seen by an influential audience during the exhibition at Charles Cowles Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Kuhn’s distinct aesthetic has propelled her as one of the most collectible contemporary art photographers—her work is in private and public collections worldwide and she is represented by galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004; followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (2018/19). In addition, Stanley/Barker Editions published Kuhn's Bushes & Succulents in 2018. In 2021, Thames & Hudson published a career retrospective titled Works. Kuhn's most recent publication Kings Road (2022) with Steidl accompanies a multi-dimensional museum traveling exhibition shown in Europe and the US. Mona Kuhn’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, Perez Art Museum Miami, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Kiyosato Museum in Japan. Kuhn's work has been exhibited at The Louvre Museum and Le Bal in Paris; The Whitechapel Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts in London; Musée de l’Elysée in Switzerland; Leopold Museum in Vienna Austria, The Polygon Gallery in Vancouver Canada, Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan and Australian Centre for Photography. Mother and Child

This modern mid-century composition of mother and child is by Fernando Oramas (1925-2016.) It is an interesting composition, with the mother in side profile and her child staring ahead at the viewer. The painting is composed of oil on canvas and measures 18” x 14” (24” x 20” framed). It is signed in the lower right. On the reverse is Oramas’ name and address in Mexico. Oramas lived in Mexico in the 1950s and 1960s and this painting appears to date from that time, based on the style and the frame. The painting is in very good condition. The distressed wood frame goes very well with the painting. It is in fair to good condition, with some light scuffs on the edges that allow the wood color to show through the grey stain of the frame as well as a very small bit of separation between the pieces of the frame. Please look at the signature photo for a good image of a section of the frame. Oramas had a major exhibition of his work in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2016. Oramas studied at the School of Fine Arts of the National University, located in the old convent of Santa Clara, in the Center of Bogotá, where he met teachers, trained in renowned academies in Europe.
