This is a good and complete English handmade wood "weighted" chess set game of 32 pieces, in its original box with a sliding lid, made by John Jaques of London and dating to the mid 20th century period.
The chess pieces are made of turned and carved varnished wood. The bases of ALL pieces are weighted with metal pieces and the bases have a green felt/paper cover.
Weighted sets like this one have a much nicer "feel" when playing.
The pieces in the set are in the Staunton style.
Sizes: Kings: 70mm ( ~ 2.75 inches); Pawns: ~45mm (~1.7 inches)
The set comes complete with its original wood storage box, having a sliding lid and complete with a paper makers sticker to the lid.

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are delighted to offer this extremely rare Georgian Masonic Tea caddy. The Tea Caddy of box form with chequered edging and borders of Tulipwood surrounding Burr Yew wood squares each featuring Satinwood oval panels depicting Masonic Symbols. The symbols include the past master, senior warden, junior warden and the past worshipful master. The top of the box features inlaid moon, stars and sun surmounted by a brass carry handle. The interior of the Tea Caddy features a floating lid with a turned metal handle. The Tea Caddy dates to the Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1800.
The Tea Caddy comes complete with working lock and tasselled key.
Tulipwood is also known as Brazilian Tulipwood, Brazilian Pinkwood and Bahia Rosewood. It is found in South America, mainly Brazil. The colour is a warm yellow with streaks or brown-red grain.
Burr Yew originates from Asia, Europe and North Africa. It is yellow-brown to orange-brown and usually conforms to a fine uniform pattern. Yew wood usually has black pips scattered throughout so clean veneers fetch a high price and are reserved for finer items. A few trees will produce a burr which offers a distinct decorative finish.
Satinwood is found in India and Sri Lanka. It has a rich golden colour and an almost reflective sheen. Satinwood is traditionally used for high quality furniture.

A large Persian wooden box and marquetry called "Khatam Kari" with mosaic decoration of stars and geometric patterns, Middle East origin, early-19th century. This box is in overall good condition considering its age and use, it still has its original silk insert fabric firmly attached which is rare. Khatam kari is a fine and meticulous marquetry work, the oldest examples of which date back to the Safavid era: khatam was then so appreciated by the court that certain princes learned the technique as well as music, painting, or calligraphy. The “Khatam-kari” is therefore the “work of inlays”. This technique consists of making patterns, most often star shapes, by inlaying fine wooden sticks (ebony, Teak, jujube, orange tree, rose), brass (for the golden parts), and camel bone (white parts). The anterior cover is embellished with an impressive enamel panel depicting a nude woman with long curling brown hair, grasping a stemmed rose and lounging against a sheer flowing fabric wrap.
The posterior cover and rounded sides of this cigarette case are plain and unembellished.
This case is fitted with a plain rounded thumbpiece and push fit catch, which when released reveals two hinged compartments.
This impressive example of antique silverware retains the original gilt interior.
