About the Artist
Artist Elizabeth Garat paints impressionist landscapes, seascapes, and scenes from her travels that reflect her deep connection to the natural world. “Exposure to nature early on planted the seed of landscape painting in me,†says Elizabeth. Raised between California and Colorado, she spent her formative years outdoors—exploring her grandfather’s sheep ranch, walking beaches with her grandmother, and discovering California Impressionism in the galleries of Laguna Beach. She later studied with noted photographer MacDuff Everton at UC Santa Barbara and trained in plein air painting with Maddine Insalaco and Joe Vinson in Italy. Renowned for his landscape paintings, this work captures the natural light on the sea, sand and rocks with splashes of rich color under a big sky.
Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island.
In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs.

Barbara and her husband Chuck moved to Fredericksburg in 2005 after living many years in Louisiana, where she taught art at Baton Rouge Lutheran School. Soon after moving home to Texas, she began painting seriously. She has studied with Ian Roberts, Kevin Macpherson, Jill Carver, Lori Putnam, and (of course!) Chuck Mauldin. Barbara’s work has been accepted in several art events, such as the Women Artists of the West National Show, Contemporary Masters Invitational Art Show in Fredericksburg, the Mountain Oyster Club Art Show, the Plein Air Artists Colorado National Juried Art Exhibition, The Museum of Western Art (Kerrville, TX) “The Party” Art Exhibition and Sale, and others.
Her paintings are characterized by color. “I like to emphasize the color that I see, as a creative and emotional response to the landscape.” She works with a limited palette, using a small number of pigments to mix colors, which results in beautiful color harmony.
Barbara has focused her attention on the Texas landscape, especially on prickly pear cactus. Cactus is fun to paint. It has a multitude of interesting colors, which are an expression of the harshness of the environment and the amount of direct sun. In spring the colors are lighter and more mellow, and the flowers of late spring are a vibrant yellow and rose, sometimes orange. She enjoys plein air work, accepting the challenges of color, design, and the environment (critters and weather). Texas abounds with variety and inspiration; there is always another painting just around the corner!
