Silent Echo I: abstract light & color photograph w/ silver, blue, red, & green
By Diane Lachman
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
This is an archival photograph printed with Epson Ultra Chrome Pigmented Ink on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Rag paper with a 2 inch white border. It is part of the "Refracted World" series, and is from an edition of 50 prints. It is signed on the back.. Diane Lachman’s photographic pandemic project began in March 2020, when Covid 19 forced us to shelter at home. After a year of experimentation with the refraction of natural light through prisms, she created complex and vibrant images that reflect our experiences during these tumultuous times. By observing the change of the position and quality of light and shadow each day, she developed a new sense of the passage of time. Her photographs reflect the desolate days of this period as well as the bright days when we experienced hope. The "Silent Echo" series recalls the strange quiet and isolation she experienced during the shut down. The daily act of photographing the color and light gave her a sense of balance and purpose. Lachman’s inventive abstract paintings and photographs emphasize the expressive power of color. Her work has been the subject of twelve solo shows. Most recently, an exhibition of her pandemic photography project: “Refracted World” was shown in July 2021 at Muse Gallery in Philadelphia. She participates in many juried and invitational group shows. Currently, Lachman is the acting director of Muse Gallery in Philadelphia where she has been a member since 2010. Her paintings are represented in numerous private and corporate collections, including Temple University School of Medicine, the Howard Gittis Student Center Art Collection at Temple, the Art Collection at Park Towne Place in Philadelphia, and the Lankenau Medical Center. Lachman studied at Rhode Island School of Design and the Cleveland Institute of Art. She earned her BFA and MFA degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, where she taught drawing and color theory from 1993 to 2013. Her intuitive approach to her work complements her years of teaching Josef Albers’ “Interaction of...

She has participated in numerous group shows both in Canada and abroad (France, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, etc.) and has had solo exhibitions in major Canadian cities from Halifax to Vancouver, as well as in New York, Marseilles, and Tempe, Arizona. ) She was included in the show She Photographs which presented thirty photographers, mostly Canadian, a few American, who explore the portrait or the self-portrait, nudes, still-life, landscape. Calliandra Californica - n. 2 (2016) - Cyanotype - abstract contemporary art
By Christine Nguyen
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a cyanotype on unprocessed paper. Singular piece. Signed en verso. Framing upon request - art exclusively at gallery. Inquire to view series, collection. Inquire to commission projects. Christine Nguyen is a Los Angeles based artist. She received her B.F.A from California State University, Long Beach and M.F.A from University of California, Irvine. As an artist, she is inspired by literature, science, nature, astronomy, geology, marine biology. The layering of works, creating depth, process and nature are important elements of her work . For example, salt crystallization has been used on found objects and encrusted on photo based works on paper. The salt crystallization process is similar to preserving some objects, while disintegrating others with time. By incorporating salt crystals onto the photo based paintings, the image presents a mystical otherworldly feel, capturing and refracting light and the slippage of time. Using photography’s processes as a point of departure, Christine Nguyen’s pioneering spirit led her to begin manipulating negatives and onward–creating her own by cutting, layering, and adding on. Nguyen’s subsequent explorations embrace drawing...

Large Scale 1980s Laser Holography, Cvetkovich Organic Hologram Collage
By Tom Cvetkovich
Located in Surfside, FL
In this holographic collage the artist, and inventor Thomas Cvetkovich uses a method of recording an object image of a first hologram as a second hologram is provided. This holographic method is known as compact holographic human interface, and was invented by him. Reconstructed images of holograms, in this case a fish, a banyan leaf and flora and fauna abstract forms, generally become visible when illuminated by a source of light having an angle of reconstruction. Thse are created with laser and computer technology. An artile in Life magazine was all it took it took to influence Tom Cvetkovich's career path, one that has brought his Youngstown company, Chromagem, an international clientele. It focused on new technology that linked the use of lasers in producing holograms, three-dimensional and free-standing images. Reminiscing on Chromagem's past work, Cvetkovich said, One of the things we're most proud of is a series of U.S. postage stamps, achievement in space. We did three stamps for that. We've done postage stamps for Canada, the German government. We've also done work for Moet & Chandon, the champagne; Estee Lauder; and the cover of the 'Star Trek Generations' box set. Over the past two Christmases, Chromagem created a special variety of Reynolds Wrap that features snowflake holograms stamped on the entire roll. Cvetkovich created his first hologram when he was a student at Kent State University in 1974. He took science and art classes to gain the knowledge on how to make the creations running through his head and onto a sketchpad into a fully realized form. "I'm coming at it, primarily, from an art background, but with some science background." He continued his studies at Lake Forest College. It was the first place in the world to offer a workshop in holography. I was there for their third year. Combining art, science Next, he earned a master's degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. The Art Institute was just starting a holography lab. Actually, I had to build my own because theirs wasn't ready. When I was going to college, I would do a math class and then make art. I could tell I was using different parts of my brain. Over the years, Cvetkovich has developed a mental truce between the creative and scientific sides of his brain. At this point, it's more of a craft, he said. I don't rely on a lot of math or science at all. I try to keep abreast at what's being invented, what new...

"Lead Screw", 2010
By Ian Gittler
Located in Hudson, NY
Ian Gittler’s Motor Art series-photographs of century-old engine parts, gears, sparkplugs, and brand tags-offers respite from the digital fetishism, overexposure and one-hundred-forty-character bursts of communication that seem to define our era. Gittler is no luddite, he loves his iPhone. But these images, often obscuring the objects beyond identification, take unsentimental pleasure in elements of weight, ground, volume and permanence that are more closely associated with a bygone heyday of industrialization. These photographs are about a tangible physical experience, about moving parts. Gittler’s expert printing-his ability to see the potential in a frame and employ the techniques necessary to articulate that vision on paper-brings the work to life. There’s wit in the brand iconography and a documentary component, but Gittler resists prescribing interpretations, saying subtext isn’t the point. His use of extremely shallow depth of field, intense contrast and exploded grain is muscular and poetic. But subtext is relevant. Although Robin Rice first approached Ian Gittler about his vector-based art on photo paper, the gallerist challenged him to create a series of photographs with that kind of machismo. As a native New Yorker who was marched through the halls of MOMA as a toddler, Gittler’s inspiration-his idea of macho-has less to do with cowboys and racecar drivers than with Franz Kline brushstrokes and modernist design. For Gittler, macho means the maximum amount of black ink that can lie across a sheet of photo paper. That kind of force. He narrowed his field of view for this series-often to a centimeter or two-in order to achieve a purely visual, visceral response. Gittler titled the work Motor Art in tribute to the 1934 Museum of Modern Art exhibit, Machine Art. Upon its sixtieth anniversary, Phillip Johnson wrote of the show (and of his own essay for its original opening), “The thrust was clear: anti-handicraft, industrial methods alone satisfied our age; Platonic dreams of perfection were the ideal.” Ian Gittler photographs, draws, writes, and makes music. He has created album covers for Willie Nelson, Roy Hargrove...
