Han Cao
"Self-Reflection: In the Bedroom", Figurative, Embroidery on Vintage Photograph

2023

About the Item

This piece titled "Self-Reflection: In the Bedroom" is an original piece by Han Cao and is made from embroidery on a vintage photograph. This piece measures 9" x 11" framed and is shipped in the pictured white frame. Han Cao is a self-taught artist currently living in Dallas, Texas. She uses embroidery to create new narratives for long-forgotten photographs and postcards found at flea markets and antique shops from around the world. All embroidery on the artwork is done by hand, directly onto the original found image. Her art combines fibers of embroidery thread with the paper fibers of each photograph to connect with the fibers of our own being – as the added dimension of each work challenges our self-identity and personal connection with unfamiliar people and places. For Silhouettes, Cao explores duality when altering the forms of subjects in her new series of double portraits. While the original photograph evokes an intimate connection with the viewer, the larger counterpart is a vast landscape where Cao invites the viewer to immerse themselves into the expanded bounty of blossom motifs, greenery, and seafoam. Cao’s purposeful demonstration of scale allows the viewer to compare the intensity of depth and movement between the pieces as the level of stitching increases with scale. To further echo movement in the work, Cao utilizes nature as a portal into a daydream, as historically literature and art have used the aspects of the natural world as a door to evoke a state of reverie. In Surge, her detailed embroidery coupled with collage completely transforms the figure into an ethereal being, his mind as turbulent as the sea he portrays. Cao says, “I am always trying to change the story of the photo, but this method allows me to transport the figure into a different world.” Instead of using photographs as tokens of recollection, Cao chooses to use them as vessels for fantastical exploration.

This piece is an original artwork by Jason Chen titled "Two-Thirds". It is made of archival pigment prints from the artist's photography that he cuts and weaves together by hand. The piece measures 16”h x 12”w and ships framed in the pictured 19”h x 15”w frame. In 2012, Jason Chen shifted his long-running focus on dry plate tintypes to a new process: photo weaving. Chen began using two separate images of the same person, then wove them together in a process exploring time, movement, process, and mutation. He has exhibited works in the series one by one over the years, but in Fragments, his 2015 solo exhibition at Paradigm Gallery, a full collection of these works were on display together for the first time. Bio // Jason Chen is originally from Guangzhou, China. He received his BFA in Animation from the University of Arts in 2008. Jason is a Philadelphia-based photographer specializing in Fashion, Editorial, and Alternative Process Photography...

Luanne Rimel is an artist, curator, instructor, and currently the Director of Education Programs at Craft Alliance Art Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Her work is layered with historical dialogue and tactile intrigue through both technique and concept. Rimel prints her original photography on repurposed flour-sack cloths using a wide-format inkjet printer. Detailed sections of the image are created and layered, collaged and hand stitched onto the cloth, referencing earlier domestic practices of mending and repair, reuse and repurposing. The delicate, repetitive hand quilting across the surface creates shadows and textures and alludes to the marking of time. Her photographic imagery and textile work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including Japan, China and Korea, and is in many private and corporate collections. Her work is traveling in Quilt National 2013 and was in QN 2011. She has exhibited in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Smithsonian Craft Shows. Her work will also be included in the new book, Art Quilts of the Midwest, published by the University of Iowa Press. Other exhibitions include a solo exhibit at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis, MO, Art Quilt Elements, Wayne, PA, and the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago IL. Luanne received an MFA in Fibers from Southern Illinois University and has taught numerous workshops and classes around the country.
