As an American born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, his distinctive design were often influenced by his Scandinavian roots. Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His early career with Selig Mfg. Co. was prolific and helped put both himself and Selig on the map for modern furniture. He then started Lawrence Peabody & Associates in 1955, a design firm in Boston which included a vast client list (Sears, Roebuck & Co., Kohler, Regal Rugs, Boyd Lighting, Chapman Lamps, and Richardson Brothers). The chair having a very finely carved top crest with a pair of winged dragons with their claws resting on a shield draped with a carved chain with a dragons tooth, the dragons flank a knight's helmet, to each side are 'grotesques' carved as the head of monks. The back having an upholstered head rest with stylized acanthus leaf carving with a carved mask to the center, the chair is upholstered in a high quality gold fabric with a scrolling leafy pattern. The curved arms terminate with carved dragon's claws resting on grotesque heads with ram's horns, the seat is of X-frame or Curule shape, the lower front of the seat having a carved knight's helmet flanked with a pair of halberds or battle axes. The curved legs joined with a 'H' frame stretcher with rounded stretcher bars carved with acanthus leaves, the chair is raised on substantial carved paw feet.
