Paul Rudolph House, 1975

Family Home by BoydDesign in New York, NY

Located on Beekman Place in New York City, The Rudolph Townhouse and Apartments marked a difficult challenge for BoydDesign. More of an architect’s laboratory, constantly in flux, than a fixed design that could be pinpointed to a single date or concept, the project required absorbing the architect’s language and sensitively reworking it. Archival photographs were more helpful than extant drawings, which were submitted for approval to the city, but were not executed as drawn. In 2000-2002, BoydDesign carried out a delicate program of removing only superficial and/or damaged plastic and mylar layers to unveil the original white painted street i-beams and white thesis marble hidden beneath. Interiors and exterior gardens were reimagined and the nine story building was stabilized.
