This luminist and atmospheric evening seascape by Granville Redmond (1871 - 1935) was painted on Catalina Island off the California coast c.1920. Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. In the portrait of the illustrious general Raimondo Montecuccoli, it can be observed that he still appears without the Order of the Golden Toson. This detail suggests that the portrait could be dated before 1664.
Raimondo Montecuccoli was a famous general and military strategist of the 17th century in the service of the Habsburg Empire. Born in 1609 in Italy, Montecuccoli fought in numerous European wars, distinguishing himself for his tactical and strategic abilities. He is best known for his victories during the Thirty Years' War and the war against the Turks. Montecuccoli is also remembered for his writings on military theory, which influenced subsequent generations of commanders. He died in 1680.
Montecuccoli came from a noble Italian family but chose to pursue a military career in the service of the Habsburg Empire. He studied in Vienna and fought in numerous battles and military campaigns, earning the trust of Emperor Leopold I.
Montecuccoli was known for his discipline, his ability to adapt to situations on the battlefield, and his skill in leading troops with cunning and determination.
Montecuccoli fought in many significant battles during the Thirty Years' War and the wars against the Turks. Some of his most famous battles include the Battle of Lens in 1648, where he achieved a decisive victory against French forces, and the Battle of Vezekény in 1664, where he defeated the Ottoman army. He faced adversaries such as the renowned French general Turenne and the great Turkish commander Kara Mustafa...

This delicate depiction of the Madonna in adoration of the Child exhibits all the human dimension and sweetness of the maternal atmosphere: Mary clasps the sleeping child to her in a tender embrace, which touches her cheek, enveloped and protected by the mantle and even a flap of the mother's veil.
The pictorial style and composition recall the ambit of Giovan Battista Salvi, the Sassoferrato, who distinguished himself expressly for this subject, with the Virgin immortalised in a humble and strongly earthly pose, depicted with simple white, red and blue colours and delicate plays of nuances on the faces and hands.
This iconographic prototype was so successful that it became the painting for countless works destined for devotion during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly appreciated for private commissions due to its marked gentleness and formal perfection, particularly of the faces.
Born in Marchigiano, Salvi developed his activity in Rome, following the dictates of the classicist sacred painting of the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci and Domenichino, but succeeding in having an autonomous and therefore clearly distinguishable style.
In very good overall condition, there are some small scattered restorations and some unravelling of the painted surface. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame.
