Notes: Taken when the photographer was 23 years old and studying meditation under the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, these images were created at the time when the Beatles, Donovan and others were also pursuing their studies in meditation there. These closeups are rare, and may never have been fully editioned.
PAUL SALTZMAN (1943) is a Canadian film and television producer, photographer, and director. A two-time Emmy Award-recipient, he has been credited on more than 300 films, both dramas and documentaries. In 1968, at the age of 23, he traveled to India for the first time as sound engineer on the National Film Board of Canada's Juggernaut documentary. He studied meditation to recover after his girlfriend had broken up with him, by mail. He learned meditation at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in the holy city of Rishikesh, India, The Beatles were coincidentally also visiting the ashram. He saw them sitting at a table and asked to join them. Paul McCartney drew up a chair. While there, he spent time with and photographed the Beatles, Donovan, Mia and Prudence Farrow and Mike Love. His photos have been judged "some of the best intimate shots" ever taken of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, and have been seen in galleries worldwide. "The Whitechapel Woman" is part of international artist, Natalie Lennard's series Birth Undisturbed.
“For the first time... I had been refused when offering chloroform... later I asked her why... shyly she turned from thw window that burst the first light of dawn and said: ‘It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t meant to, was it, doctor?’" A chance phrase by a woman in a hovel in Whitechapel in 1911, that childbirth wasn’t meant to be painful, led the young Dr Grantly Dick-Read to explore that in the absence of fear, the body's natural endorphins can replace the stress hormones that cause pain in childbirth. He went on to write the most influential book on childbirth of the last century, 'Childbirth Without Fear' in 1942, with the passage describing the encounter becoming famously enshrined in birth philosophy. “The window was broken, rain pouring in, the bed had no proper covering… the room was lit by one candle stuck in the top of a beer bottle on the mantelshelf, my patient covered in sacks… a neighbour had brought in a jug of water and a basin”. Dick-Read’s cinematic account for the first time is here visualised, re-enacted at Dennis Severs’ House, a ‘living museum’ of Victorian London. Eric Kellerman created this sensual nude photograph of a young nude woman with a large zinc vessel under her arm. It is pencil signed, titled and numbered 1 from an edition of 20. The photographer has stamped a red monogram next to his signature.
Eric Kellerman is a Briton who has lived near Nijmegen in the Netherlands for just over half his life. In 2008, he retired from academic life to spend more time on photography.
Kellerman works almost entirely in the studio and uses digital equipment from camera to print, although image manipulation is limited to darkroom-like processes. Specializing in the nude, he has a regular team of female collaborators, most of whom have a serious interest in movement (dance, drama therapy, athletics, martial arts).
Kellerman used to consider his work to be distant, abstract, melancholic, ‘unerotic’, despite its subject matter. Now he's not so sure. He emphasizes line, geometrical form, texture, implicit movement, and above all, chiaroscuro. He likes to create ambiguity in his photos, so that the viewer is sometimes unsure what part of the body is being looked at. In this way, he attempts to free the female body of its conventional associations.
