About the Item

Rancho San Carlos Cattle Ranch, 1950's Photograph 1950's photograph of the San Carlos Cattle Ranch located south of Carmel Valley, California by James Ziegler (American). The ranch was owned by Arthur C Oppenheimer and shows cowboys and three horses in front of a barn stable, each cowboy holding their respective horse. Trees consume the background. James Ziegler was an American photographer who was well known for his work in Carmel Valley, California. Zieglers photographs can be seen published in the Carmel Valley Historical Society archives, where he photographed many landscapes including cattle and local cowboys. Rancho San Carlos is a 20,000 acre piece of property just south of Carmel Valley, which has been a cattle ranch for centuries. Sold by one family after another for financial reasons, the property was most recently purchased in 1990 for $70 million by the Rancho San Carlos Partnership (RSCP) from the Oppenheimer family. The Partnership’s two general partners are A Plus Co., Ltd., formerly Daishinpan Co., Ltd., a Japanese finance company associated with Sanwa bank; and Las Garzas Associates Limited Partnership, which includes San Francisco-based real estate development and management corporation Pacific Union as a partner.
