Vintage American Navajo Rug in Storm Pattern in Maroon, Black, Gray, Ivory
Located in Barrington, IL
A striking example of mid-20th century Native American textile artistry, this vintage Navajo rug from the American Southwest features the revered Storm Pattern, a sacred and culturally significant motif within Navajo weaving traditions. Handwoven in wool on a cotton foundation, this flat-weave textile showcases the signature craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism passed down through generations of Navajo artisans.
Set against a rich maroon-red ground, two powerful medallions in ivory, gray, and black form a bold visual axis, creating an “eye-dazzler” effect emblematic of the style. The precise geometry and rhythmic symmetry of the design echo the natural harmony and cosmological beliefs central to Navajo culture.
Crafted using hand-dyed, natural pigments sourced from the land—such as vegetal, mineral, and sometimes insect-based dyes—this rug embodies a deep connection between material, maker, and environment. Its balanced palette and dynamic composition make it equally suited for display as a wall hanging or as a floor covering in a sophisticated, collector-level interior.
Whether appreciated for its cultural significance, decorative power, or artisanal technique, this Navajo Storm Pattern rug is a remarkable and authentic artifact of Indigenous American design.

Vintage Native American Navajo Rug in Ivory, Black, Red with Stair-Step Design
Located in Barrington, IL
This vintage Native American Navajo area rug, woven circa the third quarter of the 20th century, showcases traditional Southwestern craftsmanship with a warm tan background and vibrant narrow bands in red, burgundy, green, and ivory. A striking stair-step geometric pattern in deep brown/black creates bold visual contrast and adds depth to the design.
Handwoven using flat-weave techniques, the rug features a wool body on a cotton foundation, consistent with classic Navajo textile traditions. The dyes used are natural and organic, sourced from the local environment surrounding Navajo tribal lands—resulting in rich, earthy tones with lasting beauty.
Geometric patterns in Navajo rugs are more than decorative—they carry cultural, spiritual, and symbolic meaning, making each piece a work of art and heritage. Ideal as a floor rug, wall hanging, or collectible display, this piece adds a meaningful and timeless aesthetic to any space.
