Hand Colored Antique Print of a Goat and Angora Goat
Located in Langweer, NL
Original antique print of a goat and Angora goat (or Ankara). This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820. The engraving shows two caprine animals, commonly known as members of the goat family. They are labeled "Viverr. Dieren VIII" (Dutch 'viervoetige dieren, meaning quadrupeds) and "Quadrup. VIII", which suggests they are part of the eighth set in a series on quadrupeds. 1. **Top Illustration**: This image shows an animal with the distinctive thick, shaggy coat...

1844 Lithograph of a Bukharan Uzbek: Traditional Attire and Craft
Located in Langweer, NL
"1844 Lithograph of a Bukharan Uzbek: Traditional Attire and Craft" Description: This 1844 lithograph captures a traditional Bukharan Uzbek man, from the renowned series "Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde" by Auguste Wahlen. Published in Paris using the technique of handcoloured lithography, enhanced with Arabic gum on vellin paper, this print vividly portrays the rich cultural attire unique to Bukhara, Uzbekistan. The man's elaborate robe and distinctive headwear highlight the regional fashion and craftsmanship. The print’s appeal lies in its detailed depiction of historical dress and accessories, offering a window into the cultural diversity of Central Asia. Such prints are treasured for their historical value and intricate artistry, making them highly desirable to collectors and enthusiasts of ethnographic art. The lithograph depicting a man from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, offers several intriguing cultural and historical insights: 1. Traditional Attire: The attire of the Bukharan man, particularly the elaborate robe and turban, is a rich display of Uzbek textile craftsmanship. Traditional robes, often made from silk and cotton, are adorned with intricate ikat patterns—a dyeing technique where threads are dyed before weaving. This style is emblematic of Uzbekistan's well-known textile industry. 2. Turban Significance: The turban, known locally as a "doppa" or "tubeteika," is more than just practical headwear; it serves as a cultural symbol of status and identity. The style, color, and way it is worn can convey information about the wearer's social status, region, and even his clan affiliations. 3. Historical Context: Bukhara was a pivotal Silk Road city, making it a melting pot of cultures, languages, and religions. The diverse influences are reflected in the traditional clothing, which blends Persian, Turkic, and nomadic styles. 4. Artistic Technique: The use of handcoloured lithography in the 19th century allowed for high-quality, detailed prints that were more accessible to the European public. This technique involved drawing on limestone with a greasy medium, then using water and oil-based ink to print vibrant images, which were then painted by hand. 5. Cultural Preservation: Prints like this serve not only as artwork but also as historical documents that preserve and share the cultural heritage of regions less known to the Western world at the time. They played a crucial role in educating and influencing perceptions about distant cultures during the 19th century. This print, therefore, is not just a beautiful piece of art but a deep well of cultural history and craftsmanship, reflecting the rich tapestry of life in Central Asia during the 19th century. Gentle Repose at Österby: An 1824 Aquatint by Ulrik Thersner
Located in Langweer, NL
Gentle Repose at Österby: An 1824 Aquatint by Ulrik Thersner. This aquatint by Ulrik Thersner, created in 1824, depicts the serene landscape of Österby in Sweden. The image is suffused with a gentle light that bathes the scene in a warm, inviting glow. It features two individuals on horseback in the foreground, suggesting a tranquil pace of life and leisurely exploration. Their presence adds a narrative element to the scene, inviting viewers to contemplate the journey the riders are undertaking. The central focus of the aquatint is the stately building situated by the water, likely a manor house or a significant estate of the time, reflecting the architectural style of the early 19th century. The estate is flanked by expansive, lush greenery and tall trees, with a prominent pine tree in the foreground that anchors the composition. The detailed rendering of the foliage and the atmospheric perspective in the background create a sense of depth and spaciousness. In Skåne, Thersner had drawn several mansions in 1816, and he decided to publish a counterpart to Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia antiqua et hodierna. He called his work Fordna och present Sverige, and in 1817 began its publication. Carl Fredrik Akrell engraved the images, which were executed in aquatint. Eventually, Wilhelm Maximilian Carpelan joined the publication. The Scania part was completed in 1823, Östergötland was started in 1820 and Uppland and Södermanland in 1824-25. Thersner himself wrote the text for the pictures. After Thersner's death, his widow, with the help of friends, continued the publication, which had never received public support. Michael Gustaf Anckarsvärd took over the publication, in lithographic form, until 1843. The work could be continued, partly with the drawings left by Thersner as templates, partly by Anckarsvärd and others contributing new drawings. In general, Anckarsvärd's work is considered superior to Thersner's. In 1843, the work was taken over by Thersner's daughter, Thora Thersner (1818-1867). She continued publishing until her death. Thora Thersner lithographed her drawings herself, which are usually considered conscientious, if somewhat dry and weak. During her time, among other things, the part about Närke (1838-55) was continued and completed. At the time of Thora Thersner's death, the entire work comprised 91 booklets, containing 364 plates with text. The publication had cost each subscriber 682 kroner and 50 öre. More about the maker: Ulrik Thersner was a multifaceted individual, having an impactful military career alongside his work as a draftsman and topographer. Born on April 2, 1779, in Kyrkslätt parish in Finland, Thersner began his military service early, becoming a ship's boy in the Swedish navy at the tender age of seven. His naval service during Gustav III's Russian War...
