Finding the Right storage-case-pieces for You

Of all the antique and vintage case pieces and storage cabinets that have become popular in modern interiors over the years, dressers, credenzas and cabinets have long been home staples, perfect for routine storage or protection of personal items.

In the mid-19th century, cabinetmakers would mimic styles originating in the Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI eras for their dressers, bookshelves and other structures, and, later, simpler, streamlined wood designs allowed these “case pieces” or “case goods” — any furnishing that is unupholstered and has some semblance of a storage component — to blend into the background of any interior.

Mid-century modern furniture enthusiasts will cite the tall modular wall units crafted in teak and other sought-after woods of the era by the likes of George Nelson, Poul Cadovius and Finn Juhl. For these highly customizable furnishings, designers of the day delivered an alternative to big, heavy bookcases by considering the use of space — and, in particular, walls — in new and innovative ways. Mid-century modern credenzas, which, long and low, evolved from tables that were built as early as the 14th century in Italy, typically have no legs or very short legs and have grown in popularity as an alluring storage option over time.

Although the name immediately invokes images of clothing, dressers were initially created in Europe for a much different purpose. This furnishing was initially a flat-surfaced, low-profile side table equipped with a few drawers — a common fixture used to dress and prepare meats in English kitchens throughout the Tudor period. The drawers served as perfect utensil storage. It wasn’t until the design made its way to North America that it became enlarged and equipped with enough space to hold clothing and cosmetics. The very history of storage case pieces is a testament to their versatility and well-earned place in any room.

In the spirit of positioning your case goods center stage, decluttering can now be design-minded.

A contemporary case piece with open shelving and painted wood details can prove functional as a storage unit as easily as it can a room divider. Whether you’re seeking a playful sideboard made of colored glass and metals, an antique Italian hand-carved storage cabinet or a glass-door vitrine to store and show off your collectibles, there are options for you on 1stDibs.

Questions About Credenza In Lacquer
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A credenza is a cabinet-style piece of furniture typically found in the dining room. It is often used for serving food, for displaying serving dishes, and for dining ware storage. It is typically defined by its short legs and sliding doors.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
There is actually no different between lacquer and acrylic lacquer. Acrylic lacquer is a type of lacquer. Unlike nitrocellulose lacquer, acrylic lacquer goes on clear and remains clear over time.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A TV credenza, also known as a TV cabinet, is a classic piece of furniture that can be used as a stand to support your television. Similar in form to credenzas — a popular kind of case piece — a TV credenza will likely feature shelves and cabinets or drawers for storage purposes. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary TV cabinets from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The purpose of a credenza is dependent on the room in which it is placed: Most credenzas are in a dining room and serve the same function as a buffet, but credenzas in a living room or bedroom are decorative and can be used as storage or a surface for displaying small objects. Credenzas tend to be long, low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors for concealing small appliances, clothes, dishes…etc.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Why it is called a credenza relates to historic lore about the furniture. In Italian, credenza is a word for “trust” or “belief.” During the 16th century, food and drink was often tested by a servant for a prominent person to see if it contained poison. The sideboard where this tasting took place came to be called a credenza. From there, a cabinet used to hold drinkware, plates and other items became known by the term as well. Although credenzas are now general storage furniture used in homes and offices, the original name remains. On 1stDibs, explore a variety of credenzas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Lacquer refers to the finish of the cabinet, and provides a kind of glossy appearance. You would paint the cabinets a base color, and then apply a lacquered layer overtop for the desired look. You’ll find a large variety of lacquered furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Sơn mài is also known as Vietnamese lacquer painting. It is a more modern approach to a technique that has a more than 8000-year history in China and Persia. The lacquer used in these paintings comes from the sap of the lacquer tree or the Rhus succedanea.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Chinese lacquer refers to the specific lacquering styles used in Chinese wares. Chinese lacquerware has a tradition stretching back thousands of years, and vintage examples are highly sought after by collectors. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of expertly-vetted Chinese lacquerware from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Lacquer boxes are 20th century Russian boxes. The boxes feature miniature paintings and are not made out of wood as appears, but are crafted from papier-mâché instead. Shop a collection of lacquer boxes from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Credenzas are small, typically fancy, legless buffets.

  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The difference between a hutch and a credenza is their appearance: A hutch is usually a tall freestanding unit that contains cabinets or a display case that sits on top of the set of drawers underneath, and a credenza is a short and long table with low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors for concealing the items inside the unit.

  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The difference between a desk and a credenza is that a desk is a piece of furniture with a table-style work surface and tall legs used for academic, professional or domestic activities, and credenza is a short and long table with low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors for concealing the items inside the unit.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
You can restore Japanese lacquer that has been damaged by exposure to light by gently buffing it with carnauba wax. Use a soft cloth to gently rub the wax into the piece, removing any excess and avoiding undamaged lacquer. Take a look on 1stDibs for a variety of pieces featuring Japanese lacquer.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Lacquer furniture became popular for the first time in the 1920s, and the lacquering technique continued to be commonplace through the 1960s. However, many people still appreciate the beauty of lacquered furniture today. On 1stDibs, find a range of lacquer furniture from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Chinese black lacquer is a resin sourced from the Toxicodendron vernicifluum (formerly Rhus verniciflua) tree that grows throughout East Asia. Artisans produce decorative objects entirely from the substance or use it as a finish for wood and other materials. Find a selection of Chinese black lacquer furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Japanese lacquer is made of resin produced from the sap of the Urushi tree. Artisans craft bowls, vases, boxes and other items out of the material. Find a collection of Japanese lacquer furniture and decorative objects and art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, lacquer table tops are extremely durable and add a glossy look to furniture. Lacquer is a clear coating that provides a durable seal and an attractive sheen on wood furniture. Shop a selection of lacquered wood furniture, including tables, on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Japanese lacquerware items are finished with a sap that comes from the lacquer tree. This finish is prone to degradation, especially if exposed to sun and water, and age will take its toll as well. To clean lacquerware items, wet a lint-free cloth and wring as much water out as you can, then wipe the item. Finish by drying it with a soft lint-free cloth. Shop a range of antique and vintage Japanese lacquerware on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Russian lacquer boxes are also called Palekh boxes after the village where the craft was first recorded in the 1920s. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of vintage and contemporary Russian lacquer boxes from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
To shine lacquer furniture, spray a tiny amount of solvent-based furniture cleaner and then wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Ensure that you choose a product specifically labeled as safe for lacquered finishes. Shop a collection of lacquer furniture on 1stDibs.
