ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Beautiful and rare Art Nouveau or Art Deco 20th century Paravent. The stunning geometry of the pattern draws you into a hall full of archways and pillars. The room divider has four panels and is made out of wood, painted and gold leafed. The pattern comes out of the panels, as it is textured in a 3 dimensional way. The back of the room divider is painted black. Details are painted in greens, blues and pastel purple and beige colors. The size of the home screen measures 215 cm in height, 185 in width and 2 cm in depth. Art Deco Pair of French Spelter Bookends in Fish Shape and Marquinia Marble Base
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Original and rare pair of bookends in Art Deco style; the design is essential with bold, marked lines, overall pleasingly elegant and proportionate; the fish, made of spelter a schematic representation of two angel fish (Pterophyllum Scalare); the rectangular base with two shaped corners is made of black Marquinia marble; the pair was produced by sophisticated spelter casting in an artisanal workshop in Saint-Ouen, a quaint suburb of Paris, France, between 1930 and 1935; master craftsmen then finished the objects by hand to give them a delicate and graceful shape, then subjected them to a delicate and complex treatment with special and secret acids to make them take on elegant bronze hues, then they were placed on a precious base of elegant black Marquinia marble; the craftsmen were able to submit metal to their artistic sensibilities, creating two unique and fantastic objects. The Pterophyllium or angel fish (see photo), is a tropical freshwater fish...

Pair of Greenhouse Bookends Art Deco Wrought Iron stamped Zadounaïsky
Located in NANTES, FR
Pair of greenhouses wrought iron bookends stamped Zadounaisky. In very good shape. Measures: Height: 12.4 cm Length: 16 cm Width: 4 cm Weight: 3,250 kg Son of Russian emigrants, Michel Zadounaisky moved to France in 1916. In 1920, he discovered wrought iron work by joining the Fournet chandelier factory. He also devotes himself to embossing in the round, that is to say the confrontation with metal with the sole tool of a hammer, and with the help of fire, techniques in which he is a past master. In 1924, he opened his first studio in Lyon and worked there until 1953, when he became one of the emblematic figures of Lyon's decorative arts. From the 1930s, his theme was personalized, and appeared a whole bestiary of animals sometimes bordering on the fantastic and the strange. Naturalized in 1948, Michel Zadounaisky continues to create, in close and intimate collaboration with Buer (binder) and Dumaine (glassmaker), objects intended for a wealthy and enlightened clientele. Eager to abolish the boundary between the liberal arts and the useful arts, he is a craftsman, an artist, and perhaps the only Art Deco iron sculptor...
