About the Artist:
In 1874, at the age of six, Elizabeth Spalding and her family settled in Denver where her father, the Reverend John F. Spalding, became an early-day bishop in the Colorado Diocese of the Episcopal Church. After graduating from Wolfe Hall, a female academy in Denver where she later taught, she went to New York in 1890 to study drawing at a private school and painting at Cooper Union with J. Alden Weir.
Later in the decade, she returned to New York to study at the Art Students League with Childe Hassam, Kenyon Cox and John Twachtman, and did outdoor sketching with Leonard Ochtman. She also spent summers working with a number of eminent American artists: Arthur Wesley Dow at Ipswich, Massachusetts; John F. Carlson at Woodstock, New York (later the first landscape painting instructor at the newly-founded Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs,1920-22); Charles H. Woodbury at Ogunquit, Maine; and Henry McCarter at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts classes in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. She also studied in France and England and lived briefly in Washington, DC.
Spending the major portion of her career In Denver, she became a founding member of several local important art organizations. The first was the Le Brun Art Club, the city’s initial all-female artist group formed in 1890 and named after the renowned eighteenth-century French artist, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun. John George Sowerby was born into a prosperous Gateshead family of glass manufactures and artists. He inherited the family business, the Ellison Glass Works, one of the world’s largest producers of pressed glass, where he introduced designs inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. Initially he combined his energies at the glass works with his work as an illustrator and painter of landscapes and floral subjects with a Pre-Raphaelite intensity, strong colours and rich detail. He exhibited many of these paintings at the Royal Academy. In the 1880s he collaborated with Newcastle artist, Henry Hetherington Emmerson, on illustrations for the children’s books Afternoon Tea (1880) and The May Blossom (1881). Although were critically very well received but the publications were attacked by Kate Greenaway who considered them too close to her own work. Sowerby then went on to produce highly aesthetic illustrated books At Home (1881) and At Home Again (1883), with decorations by Thomas Crane. Gleeson White, editor of The Studio magazine stated that in Afternoon Tea Sowerby “set a new fashion for ‘aesthetic’ little quartos’ (The Studio, 1897). Roger Dixon in Belfast Publishing (Oxford University Press, 2011, p.79) considered these At Home and At Home Again to be “among the loveliest books ever produced.” Never very wise as a business man, in the early 1880s he left Ellison Glass Works being declared bankrupt in 1884. He returned to the works again as a paid employee.

"Bright as a light!" exclaims artist James Nyika. Taking inspiration from a quietly crowded pantheon in Rome, James captures the delightful scene brightly lit under the sun. "When I arrived at this location, I found the square and the sky so beautifully lit by the light of the day. And with very few people around, you could see a lot of the bases of the columns. I wanted to capture the warmth of the sun as it evaporates any lingering dew and 'crispness' of the air."
About the Artist
Artist James Nyika paints the glowing atmosphere of cities across the world. As a child growing up in Kenya, he found art materials at the student bookshop and also borrowed just about every art history volume from the British Council library in Nairobi. "I checked out the same books over and over just to stare at the art, to try and understand how it was created," says James. With family encouragement to study engineering, James moved to the U.S. and immersed himself in science studies at Boston University. Several years after embarking on a tech career, he set a goal to create at least one painting a week, never throwing away any works and learning as much as possible in his off hours. Today, James still balances his full-time career designing large software systems with his prolific output as a painter. "Painting is a great antidote to the regularity of a computing profession and I really value it for the uncertainty that it brings - something frowned upon when writing code."

Katsuhito Nishikawa , born in Tokyo in 1949 is a Japanese visual artist . He studied at Keio University (Japan), Tokyo University (Tokyo), then at the Munich School of Fine Arts (Germany) and at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts (Germany). ). He taught for many years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg (Germany) and the School of Art and Design in Reims (France). He currently lives in Neuss (Germany).
After having come to settle partially in Europe in the early 1980s , he is exposed in Japan, the United States, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Great Britain and France where he signs twenty or so public commissions in the urban space.
The work operates in cycles of white sculptures inspired by nature as architectural achievements, playing on the concept of different scales and varied materials. Let's mention "Innercouryard of Sintra" (1992), "Aqua" (2000), or the emblematic cycle of Physalis , begun in 1998. The Color as shadow cycle, made up of colored plexiglas screens, was shown in Europe and Asia .
In 1999, he exhibited a work entitled Physalis Hanging on the Champs-Elysees as part of the international exhibition The Fields of Sculpture . This work, produced by the Caisse des Depots et Consignations was then offered to the Musée des Beaux- Douai Arts (Northern France). It is now installed permanently on the banks of the Scarpe, Douai.
In particular, he inaugurated December 15 , 2006 Physalis Partitura , historic public commission in the courtyard of the University Hospital of Lille , with grants from the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the ERDF.
