About the Item
This 38" x 48" oil on canvas painting is by Boston-based artist Anthony Dyke. This abstract composition utilizes a dynamic arrangement of geometric planes and chromatic contrasts. The upper half of the canvas is dominated by a patchwork of interlocking rectangles and squares in saturated hues—forest green, cerulean blue, ochre, and sky blue. The interaction between cool and warm tones, especially the adjacency of the cerulean and orange segments, creates chromatic vibration and visual depth. The orange square is visually animated by vertical drips of ultramarine, which disrupt the otherwise rigid linearity and inject a gestural spontaneity into the composition. This juxtaposition between controlled structure and expressive mark-making recalls the dialogue between Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. The presence of paint drips nods to the performative legacy of action painting while remaining confined within geometric borders.
The bottom left introduces triangular forms in black and midnight blue, whose sharp angles contrast the rectilinear dominance above. Meanwhile, a large crimson and rose-pink field in the bottom right corner anchors the composition and introduces a field of atmospheric warmth. The application of paint varies—some fields are matte and uniform, contributing to a graphic clarity, while others subtly reveal brushwork or underlying texture, enhancing the material presence of the painted surface. This oscillation between optical purity and painterly tactility gives the work a layered sensibility.
Anthony Dyke was born in Norwich, Vermont and attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University earning a BFA and MFA in painting. As an artist and arts educator, he relocated from New York City to his down¬town Oklahoma City studio, working there for two decades before returning to Boston in 2020. Coming from VERMONT where the seasons are distinctly different from one another. My shift from a pastoral setting to an urban environment set up a dichotomy in my work, both visual and emotional. I have an extensive education in painting, photography, graphic design and figure sculpture. These mediums intersect in my work through many years of creating artworks and currently speak to my interest in abstract painting. During my senior year in the BFA Program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, my large painting “Natole” was chosen by Frank Stella (the juror) into the highly competitive and prestigious Dana Pond Painting Competition.
Emerging from figurative painting into the realm of abstraction, Tony Dyke draws inspiration from interior spaces and his urban surroundings. With a direct interest in the work of Diebenkorn and Hoffman, he manipulates images that are often reduced to shapes and areas of color in an intuitive process that leads his work to a uniquely painterly abstraction.

Artist signed verso, oil on canvas 48x36
JARO was born in 1934 Prague the Czech Republic. Since his childhood, he enjoyed his art class at school the most. Almost every drawing and panting were on display in his classroom. During his college years, in Vienna Austria, studying to become mechanical engineer, he continued to study art. His technical drafting education became later a major factor and influence in his GEOMETRIC
ABSTRACTION (Non-Objective) paintings. He immigrated in 1957 to the USA, New York , where he finished his first small oil painting. Since then JARO painted
on and off, until he opened his own studio in 1965 on East 4th Street in the Village. Here he created a series of well designed palette knife paintings in the style of abstract expressionism. JARO stretched off shaped canvases, making him one of the first artists working with these unique shapes.
At the time JARO owned his own studio, he studied at the Art Students League 57th Street, New York. Later in 1969, he studied in Woodstock for several years with John Pike, one of the foremost watercolorists in America, as well as, with Robert Angeloch...
