Daniel Pailes-Friedman
Circles One, Orange, Green, Indigo, Teal, Dark Violet Square Abstract Circle

2010

About the Item

Layered, circular shapes in orange, indigo blue, green and teal are eye-catching on a multicolored, jewel-toned background. Framed in a thin, light natural wood float frame with a rubbed silver leaf face. Signed on verso. Daniel Pailes-Friedman's ‘Circles’ series explores compositions that focus on continuous movement, yet simultaneously conveying calmness and a quiet mystery. The work embraces mathematical and logical tendencies, with controlled systems of continuous lines creating grid-like compositions. From the artist's statement: "Painting is a physical, mental and spiritual process. It begins with preparing a canvas and ends when everything clicks and there is nothing left to resolve. A composition starts with a series of lines created by suppressing conscious control. It is fast and spontaneous, like automatic drawing. In just a few minutes the entire composition is laid out. Once that is complete, there is a transition to a deliberate work flow. Areas of color are meticulously applied defining the composition and are added slowly and with a studied patience allowing the painting to evolve. A few highly saturated colors are applied first and create the focal point of the painting. Layered on top of that are areas of more diluted colors that fall into a palette of near whites. Together they work to create depth and movement. Negative space is critical. Implied transparencies emerge with the juxtaposition and intersection of the colored shapes. Some paintings come quickly. Some take months. Each piece leads to the next."

In the middle of the road
By Dana Frankfort
Located in Houston, TX
Dana Frankfort In the middle of the road, 2017 oil on canvas over panel 48 x 48 x 1.75 inches For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form. The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
