Dieter Villinger, born 1947, is a German painter. His work consists of monochrome, mostly large-format paintings. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel. His artworks are part of numerous art collections around Germany, including the Sammlung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Berlin, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich and Neues Museum, Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design in Nürnberg.
Villinger explores the way in which colour is applied and the moving, relief-like surface. The painting process remains visible on the canvas and illustrates the power of colour, which is both the means of representation and the object of representation.
