About the Item

This original vintage 1985 abstract oil painting by Edward Marecak (1919-1993) showcases a captivating blend of geometric imagery and vibrant colors, including coral pink, black, brown, green, blue, golden yellow, orange, purple, and red. Executed in oil on board, the work is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner. The image size measures 41 ¼ x 35 ¾ inches, and it is framed in a custom frame that measures 41 ¾ x 36 ¼ inches, perfectly complementing the striking composition. About Edward Marecak: Edward Marecak was an artist whose commitment to education and his deep belief in fostering the artistic growth of future generations defined his legacy. Rather than seeking fame, Marecak chose to dedicate his life to teaching, using his salary to support his creative freedom, allowing him to pursue his passion for art on his own terms, independent of market trends. His Slovakian immigrant parents instilled in him a strong appreciation for education, which he passed on to countless students over his 25-year career in the Denver Public School system. Marecak's artistic versatility spanned numerous mediums, including lithographs, monoprints, drawings, hooked rugs, ceramics, wood sculptures, stained-glass windows, and jewelry. While he exhibited during his lifetime, he was known to be "his own greatest collector." Today, he is posthumously recognized as one of Colorado’s preeminent modernists, with recent shows and his popularity at the Kirkland Museum solidifying his place in art history. Marecak’s artistic journey began in the farming community of Brunswick, Ohio, where he demonstrated early talent. After studying at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and Cranbrook, he pursued lithography under Lawrence Barrett. His artistic style was influenced by the Carpathian folk tales of his childhood, which freed him from traditional techniques of perspective and modeling. This led him to embrace flat, intricate patterns and brilliant color contrasts, often drawing from Byzantine design. Marecak's work, including this piece, features bold outlines, geometric shapes, and vibrant, energetic colors that echo his fascination with the power of color and form. Marecak’s legacy endures not only through his vibrant paintings but also through the lives he touched as a teacher and mentor, fostering creativity and inspiring future generations of artists.
